Job Description - Retail Trainer

The Retail Trainer will deliver practical, learner-centred training to prepare youth for entry-level employment in the retail sector. The role involves classroom facilitation, practical demonstrations, learner assessment, mentoring and coordination with internal teams to support successful course completion and placement.

Key Responsibilities

Training Delivery

  • Deliver retail training in accordance with the approved curriculum and session plans.

  • Train learners in retail operations, customer service, sales techniques, product presentation, visual merchandising, inventory management, billing and point-of-sale operations.

  • Develop learners’ communication, workplace etiquette, digital literacy and employability skills.

  • Use role plays, case studies, demonstrations, group activities and practical exercises to make sessions engaging and job-relevant.

  • Provide additional academic support to learners who require assistance.

Learner Management

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive and participative learning environment.

  • Monitor learner attendance, punctuality, participation and performance.

  • Counsel and motivate learners to improve retention and course completion.

  • Identify learning gaps and prepare appropriate remedial interventions.

  • Promote professional behaviour, discipline and readiness for the workplace.

Assessment and Documentation

  • Conduct diagnostic, formative and final assessments as prescribed.

  • Evaluate practical assignments, role plays and learner projects.

  • Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, session-delivery and learner-progress records.

  • Prepare and submit reports within defined timelines.

  • Maintain supporting evidence and documentation required for programme reviews and audits.

Placement Support

  • Prepare learners for interviews, group discussions and workplace interactions.

  • Conduct mock interviews and provide individual feedback.

  • Coordinate with the placement team to assess learners’ job readiness.

  • Share accurate learner profiles, assessment results and placement recommendations.

  • Engage with employers, retail stores and industry representatives when required.

  • Follow up with placed learners and support their workplace retention.

Curriculum and Quality

  • Provide feedback on the relevance and effectiveness of training content.

  • Stay informed about retail-sector trends, technologies and employer expectations.

  • Participate in trainer-development programmes, reviews and standardisation exercises.

  • Ensure compliance with NIIT Foundation’s training standards, safeguarding requirements and organisational policies.

  • Maintain training equipment, learning resources and classroom infrastructure responsibly.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Training delivery against the approved plan.

  • Learner attendance and retention.

  • Assessment performance and course-completion rate.

  • Improvement in learners’ communication and job-readiness skills.

  • Certification and placement outcomes.

  • Post-placement retention.

  • Accuracy and timeliness of reports and records.

  • Learner and employer feedback.

  • Compliance with programme-quality standards.

Educational Qualifications

  • Graduate in Retail Management, Business Administration, Commerce, Marketing or a related discipline.

  • Relevant retail-sector certification or Training of Trainers certification is desirable.

  • Candidates with strong retail-industry experience and an appropriate diploma may also be considered.

Experience

  • Two to five years of relevant experience in retail operations, sales, customer service or retail training.

  • At least one year of classroom, vocational or workplace training experience is preferred.

  • Experience working with youth from underserved or diverse backgrounds will be an advantage.

  • Practical exposure to organised retail, point-of-sale systems, inventory processes and store operations is desirable.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Sound understanding of retail operations and customer-service standards.

  • Strong facilitation, presentation and classroom-management skills.

  • Ability to conduct practical demonstrations and activity-based training.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English and Hindi; knowledge of the local language is desirable.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office, online learning platforms and digital reporting tools.

  • Ability to assess learners objectively and maintain accurate documentation.

  • Strong mentoring, counselling and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with training, mobilisation, placement and project teams.
