We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Substation Design Engineer to join our Power and Utilities Engineering team. The role involves the end-to-end design of high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) substations, ensuring reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, project managers, and clients to design substations that support transmission and distribution networks efficiently. This role is ideal for a professional with a strong foundation in electrical engineering and proven expertise in substation layout, equipment specification, and protection/control systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Substation Design & Layout
• Develop detailed electrical designs for HV/MV substations, including single line diagrams (SLD), general arrangements, grounding layouts, and control schematics.
• Perform equipment sizing, cable routing, and panel design in line with client and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure optimal use of space, safety clearances, and adherence to design codes and standards.
• Equipment Selection & Specifications
• Specify substation equipment such as power transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, isolators, CTs/PTs, surge arresters, batteries, and control panels.
• Evaluate vendor proposals, review technical data sheets, and participate in vendor meetings.
• Protection & Control Systems
• Design protection, metering, and control systems for substation automation.
• Develop relay coordination studies, SCADA integration plans, and communication protocols.
• Project Engineering & Coordination
• Collaborate with civil, structural, and mechanical teams to ensure integrated substation designs.
• Coordinate with project managers, utility providers, and contractors to deliver designs on schedule.
• Conduct design reviews and resolve technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
• Compliance & Standards
• Ensure compliance with international and regional standards such as IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, and utility-specific guidelines.
• Perform design checks, safety analyses, and risk assessments.
• Documentation & Deliverables
• Prepare and review technical drawings, BOQs (Bill of Quantities), and design documentation.
• Support tender preparation, bid evaluation, and proposal development.
• Continuous Improvement
• Stay updated on advancements in substation automation, digital substations, renewable integration, and smart grid technologies.
• Recommend innovative design practices and tools to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience in substation design for utilities, EPC firms, or consulting organizations.
• Technical Skills:
• Proficiency in substation design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, EPLAN, CYME, or similar).
• Strong knowledge of power system design, grounding, protection, and control.
• Familiarity with SCADA systems, protection relays, and communication protocols.
• Exposure to renewable energy interconnection and smart grid technologies is a plus.
