Job Description - Intern - Embedded Hardware, Power & Safety

About Origin

Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India’s most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

About the role

The Engineering Intern role is a hands-on, high-intensity introduction to industrial hardware engineering. You will support the core team by building test rigs, populating prototype boards, and organizing the hardware lab. We expect strong engineering fundamentals, a meticulous attention to detail, and a fearless attitude towards working with hardware.

Key Responsibilities

Lab & Prototyping Support:

  • Hand-solder prototype PCBs (including SMD components) and assemble electrical test rigs.
  • Fabricate wire harnesses and cables for robot sub-assemblies.
  • Maintain the hardware lab's inventory, ensuring components, tools, and safety equipment are organized.

Testing, Data Collection & HIL:

  • Operate Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test benches to run automated test suites, collecting and organizing simulation data for the engineering team.
  • Assist in wiring and mechanically assembling HIL test rigs.
  • Run automated charge/discharge cycles on battery modules and log the data for analysis.
  • Assist engineers in probing live circuits to verify voltage levels and signal integrity.
  • Document teardowns of off-the-shelf power tools or electronics to analyze their power architecture.

Hardware Defined Safety:

  • Assist in mapping and validating hardware safety signal paths. Use multimeters and oscilloscopes to inject simulated error signals (such as a disconnected limit switch or triggered E-stop) and verify that the hardware circuit successfully propagates the fault to cut motor power.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong Fundamentals: Deep understanding of basic circuit theory (KVL/KCL, basic op-amps, passive components).
  • Hands-On Tinkerer: You should have a history of building hardware projects, taking apart electronics, or repairing devices.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to lab safety (especially when working around batteries and power supplies).
  • Familiarity with multimeters and basic oscilloscopes.
  • Willingness to learn Python or basic scripting for test automation.

Preferred Experiences

  • High-current project experience and PCB Prototyping Experience.

For apprentice/Intern :
This is a six-month contract-to-hire position, with potential for longer-term opportunities depending on your contributions and interests. We’re excited to work with motivated individuals who are eager to support real-world robot development and grow alongside us.

  • Gain experience in a dynamic startup environment at the forefront of robotics and AI innovation.
  • Contribute to the development of technology that will revolutionize the construction industry.
  • Work alongside a talented and passionate team committed to making a real-world impact.
  • Learn from experienced professionals and gain valuable skills in robotics software engineering.
  • Gain practical experience in a real-world engineering environment.
  • Contribute to a project with the potential to make a significant impact on the construction industry.
