Job Description - Mechanical Engineer - Robotic Enclosure & Harnessing Design | Apprentice

As a Mechanical Engineer – Robotic Enclosure & Harnessing Design Apprentice at Origin (formerly 10xConstruction), you will be responsible for designing the “body” of the robot. You will protect the robot’s electronics by designing a high-performance, aesthetically-conscious enclosure system that can withstand harsh construction environments.

This role sits at the intersection of industrial design, thermal management, and electromechanical integration, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to a revolutionary product from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities -

Robotic Enclosure Design

  • Design robust enclosures and control panels for electronic components, ensuring serviceability and ease of access.
  • Lead mechanical design for Ingress Protection (IP rating) against dust, water, and debris.
  • Design vibration mounting and isolation systems to protect sensitive electronics.
  • Design for mobile robot requirements including sensor mounting, EMI/EMC shielding, and thermal management.

Thermal Management

  • Conduct thermal analysis (CFD) and design active/passive cooling solutions (heat sinks, fans, etc.) to ensure component performance in extreme temperatures.

Wire Harness & Cable Management (Key Deliverable)

  • Design and route major wire harnesses and cable management systems for reliability and serviceability.
  • Plan integration of all electrical subsystems including:
    1. High-power systems (actuators).
    2. Logic/network systems (compute).
    3. Sensitive systems (sensors).
  • Create detailed harness documentation including routing diagrams and manufacturing specifications.
  • Ensure grounding, earthing, and EMI/EMC shielding strategies are incorporated into mechanical design.

Systems Engineering & Verification & Validation (V&V)

  • Develop engineering requirements and V&V protocols for thermal performance, ingress protection, shock/vibration, and EMI/EMC.
  • Conduct DFMEA and risk analysis for enclosure and harness designs.
  • Maintain documentation related to enclosure compliance and testing.

Prototyping & Testing

  • Lead rapid prototyping of enclosures using 3D printing, sheet metal fabrication, and other methods.
  • Conduct testing such as thermal tests, water ingress tests, and drop tests to validate designs.
  • Graduates only.
  • Relevant work experience: >6 months.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, etc.) and GD&T.
  • Experience/exposure to enclosure design for IP ratings, thermal management (CFD), and vibration.
  • Exposure to designing and documenting wire harnesses and cable management solutions.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal, injection molding, and 3D printing.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design portfolio showcasing relevant projects.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance for enclosures (NEMA, UL, etc.).
