Background
NCAD drives radical and creative innovation through excellence in research-led art and design education. It empowers its students to shape the contemporary world through critical practice, studio-based learning, research and engagement.
The aim of the School of Design is to create a design culture engaged in ongoing debate on all aspects of design; a culture that thrives on new ideas, new ways of doing things and new areas of exploration. We encourage our students to experiment and take risks in order to carve new aesthetic paths and make technical innovations within, and beyond, their design discipline. We have extensive links with Industry, and students regularly work on live projects within a commercial, social or cultural context. The College seeks to ensure that our design students develop the necessary creative, technical, thinking and interpersonal skills to become highly employable graduates, entrepreneurs and thought leaders.
This post will be an integral part of the academic staff within the School and College. Lecturing staff actively contribute to the teaching and learning, research and commercialisation/knowledge transfer and internationalisation agendas of the College.
The post is funded through the Creative Futures Academy (CFA). NCAD is the lead partner of the CFA, a ground breaking partnership between three leading creative institutions – the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), University College Dublin (UCD), and the Institute of Art Design + Technology (IADT), and Ireland’s creative sector including the Arts Council, Design & Craft Council, Institute of Designers in Ireland, RTÉ and Screen Ireland.
Programme
This role’s primary focus is to develop, coordinate and deliver our new part-time MA in Circular by Design, supported by the Creative Futures Academy.
There is a critical need to build the circular innovation capacity of Ireland’s design sector, and equip the next generation of fashion and textiles designers with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to rethink why, what and how we make. Therefore, NCAD is developing a new suite of programmes, for current and future professionals who want to investigate and challenge the current ‘linear’ state-of-play.
The inaugural MA in Circular by Design is focussed on the fashion and textiles sector. This part-time MA is for those who want to build a deep and nuanced understanding of sustainability and circularity within the fashion and textiles sector, and practically apply that knowledge to their own work or to tackle key ecological and social challenges across the value chain. The programme combines theory and practice and champions collaborative and pre-competitive processes.
Through a combination of taught seminars and workshops and independent study, learners will be invited to question and critique the purpose of textiles and fashion today, and investigate alternative ways of designing, producing, selling, using and disposing of textiles and clothing.
Using their own design practice, research and experience as a guide, learners will develop their own critical perspective on the local and global challenges the industry faces, and begin to shape and articulate their unique role within it, as change makers.
Through live industry-informed and led projects, learners will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers and with external partners such as fashion and textiles brands, retailers and manufacturers, circular innovators, social enterprises and local councils to innovate and test new circular materials, products and services.
Role
This specified purpose contract will develop, co-ordinate and deliver our new part-time MA in Circular by Design launching in September 2024, as well as delivering teaching sustainable, circular and regenerative design principles and practices to students across the College where required.
This role has been established through HCI Pillar 3 funding and is a funded position for the duration of the project.
