About Children’s Health Ireland

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) operates as a single service across the existing Dublin children’s hospitals, Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght. This is a once-in-a-generation time for paediatrics in Ireland with the merger of our current 3 children’s hospitals in Dublin into a world-class iconic national children’s hospital, purpose built to deliver the best care and treatments that are available for future generations.

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Neonatology at Temple Street and Crumlin is a quaternary referral service for infants born at any of the 19 maternity units in Ireland who require specialist care. Across the two sites, all paediatric subspecialties for neonates with complex needs and congenital abnormalities are provided for.

The existing surgical and medical neonatal services will merge into a single entity for relocation to the new children’s hospital (NCH), which will include an 18-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

About The Coombe Hospital

The Coombe Hospital, with up to 9,000 deliveries annually is a voluntary university-teaching hospital with national, regional and area responsibilities for ensuring the optimal health of mothers, women and infants. It is a recognised centre of excellence for tertiary services, providing tertiary maternal and foetal medicine services with immediate access at regional and national levels for in-utero transfer requests in both maternal and foetal interest, as well as postnatal transfer of infants for tertiary care.

The Neonatal Unit (including Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit and Special Care Baby Unit) has more than 1,000 admissions every year and is one of the largest providers of care for VLBW infants in Ireland. Due to its proximity to CHI Crumlin, The Coombe Hospital is a referral centre for antenatally diagnosed cardiac and surgical abnormalities.
