The Irish College of General Practitioners is the postgraduate training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training and research in the specialty of General Practice. The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the ICGP is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The ICGP is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice.

About GP Training
Since March 2021, the ICGP holds primary responsibility for postgraduate specialist medical training in the specialty of General Practice. As part of this responsibility, the ICGP designs and delivers a world-class and continuously improving GP Training Scheme, as set out in the vision, mission and values statement. Furthermore, the new National GP Training Programme represents a step change for postgraduate training in General Practice in Ireland. Building on the existing infrastructure of GP Training schemes, the College is committed to implementing a world-class National GP Training Programme, delivered through a blended learning model.
The Role
The Scheme Director is the leader of the educational team for an individual GP Training Scheme, delivering high standard coordinated training for doctors undergoing specialist training in general practice under the governance of the ICGP National Training Programme.
The duties and responsibilities are those of the Assistant Scheme Director with additional responsibilities for Scheme Director and will include, but are not limited, to the following:
1.Overall management of the scheme assigning duties and responsibilities as appropriate to the Assistant Scheme Directors and Scheme Administrator.
2.Cooperate and work with the National and Regional Training Directors
3. Contribute actively, including by membership of committees and working groups, to regional and national efforts to manage the quality and consistency of GP training.
4.Interface with the wider general practitioner community in the region.
5. Liaise with local primary care management and hospitals to ensure the continuity of administrative support and resources for the scheme.
6. Liaise with GP Trainers and ensure adequate educational and organisational support is provided.
7. Lead on educational planning and scheduling for the scheme in conjunction with the national programme.
8. Take overall responsibility for dealing with trainee performance, attendance, discipline, and trainee support issues where intervention or remedial action is required and escalating these matters to the Scheme Advisory Committee.
9. Manage and oversee any budgetary matters for the scheme.
The Scheme Director also has responsibility for the following duties:
1.Undertake the full range of duties required when carrying out teaching, assessing, and facilitating small-group sessions with trainees (both face-to-face and virtually as appropriate).
2. Assist with curriculum planning, including the development of teaching materials and resources. Undertake curriculum delivery through small group and plenary teaching and facilitation
3. Actively promote reflective practice and professionalism among trainees. Provide personal support and trainee mentorship when required.
4. Undertake trainee assessments and manage formative and summative feedback on these assessments.
5. Regularly monitor trainee progression, providing portfolio guidance and intervening appropriately. Monitor and support trainee progression including education portfolio.
6. Ensure regular attendance and contribute accordingly to the Competency Progression review process.
7.Contribute, when required, to the development of assessment instruments.
8. Provide GP Trainer and hospital supervisor support and assist with the management of the delivery of day release.
9. When not teaching, undertake a range of duties such as and not limited to; conducting quality assurance tasks (such as visits to GP practices and hospital teaching sites); contributing to the continuous improvement of the GP Training Scheme; recruitment; curriculum evaluation and quality improvement processes.
10. Participate in any committees established to assist with the job purpose and collaborate and co-operate with the Scheme Director and the National Programme in the performance of any assigned duties.
