Job Description - Cybersecurity Software Researcher MTU

The Nimbus Research Centre at MTU invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Cybersecurity Software Researcher at the Nimbus Research Centre.

The successful candidate will report to the Nimbus Gateway Manager. The position is based within the Nimbus Research Centre, MTU Cork campus. The successful candidate may be required to work on a hybrid model combining online remote working with on-site working.

Main Duties of the Post include but not limited to:

The successful candidate will work within the Nimbus Gateway software research and with the Cyber Skills team. Nimbus is currently involved in many applied research and investigative industrial projects. As such, we currently have a need for one motivated individual with an interest in software development and cybersecurity to join the team.

The following indicate some of the principal duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.

This includes but not limited to:

• Designing, modifying, building, testing and experimenting cyberattack scenarios, research frameworks, complex IT (Information Technology) environments, hybrid OT/IT environments and research testbeds. For example, an Internet of Things testbed for security analysis or a cybersecurity sandbox for malware analysis and intelligent malware detection.

• Contributing to the activities of the Cyber Skills project, Nimbus Gateway, the Cybersecurity services of the ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub and associated projects.

• Engage in research projects into the provision of cybersecurity services to industry partners including planning, organizing and analysis within the overall scope of a research project or industry engagement.

• Design and setup real-world applicable cyber security scenarios on both the mobile and cloud cyber range infrastructures.

• Dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged.

• Advising on and specifying requirements for new and updated equipment.

• Partaking in training and professional development.

• Undertake such other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the University Authorities.

The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the President (or authorised Officer) and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Qualification Requirements and Selection Criteria for role:

Essential:

Essential:

• Hold an Honours Primary Degree (Second Class or higher) in Computer Science, Data Science and Analytics or equivalent discipline.

• Knowledge and experience of working with Python and/or other programming languages.

• Knowledge of Networking and Software Cyber security concepts.

• Strong SW development and scripting skills.

• Knowledge and experience working with cybersecurity concepts, for example, malware analysis, cyber-attack scenarios.

• Ability to adapt to changing working practices.

• Fluent in spoken and written English

• Willingness to work flexible hours and travel nationally as required.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of modern networking technologies

• Experience working with Open Source software projects, libraries, and dependencies.

• Knowledge of cloud/virtualization platforms and infrastructure as code tools (e.g., terraform, fabric, salt, chef, etc.).

NOTE: In addition to the minimum qualifications, it may be necessary to introduce further shortlisting criteria. Therefore, candidates may be shortlisted on the basis of qualifications and suitable experience based on details given in the application. Candidates should note that they may be called for more than one interview. Upon completion of interview, a panel will be formed from appointable candidates.

Remuneration, Benefits and Facilities:

Salary scale effective 1 October 2023:

• Cybersecurity Software Researcher (Researcher to Senior Researcher Scales €42,633 –

€60,647) depending on qualifications and experience.

• 1 year fixed-term, whole-time contract – 35 hours per week.

The rate of remuneration for all appointments may be adjusted from time to time with government policy.

Additional Information:

A successful candidate will be required to submit a passport, documentary evidence confirming academic qualifications, and to undergo a medical examination. Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance may also be required. References will be sought in relation to successful candidate.
