ISSU - Irish Second-Level Students' Union is recruiting for a National Student Voice Development Organiser 

Founded in 2008, the ISSU is the national representative body for second-level students in the Republic of Ireland with a mission to be an agent and a catalyst for change in the Irish education system, seeking to advance education by involving young people actively in all aspects of their education, thus empowering and supporting young people to realise their voice and take action.

The overarching aim of the National Student Voice Development Organiser is to organise, facilitate, liaise, support, and promote the elections, training, campaigns, policies, and voice of the Coiste Gnó (the National Executive) of the ISSU and the ISSU membership. The role involves working with mostly under 18’s who are in full time education and serve one term to fulfil their election mandate.

As a small organisation, members of the ISSU staff support each other’s work and contribute to a wide range of activities. Specific duties of the National Student Voice Development Organiser include (but are not limited to):

  • Organise and facilitate Annual Assembly which involves event planning, organising workshops and arranging ballots
  • Organise and facilitate training and a formal handover for the Coiste Gnó each year (including the development of training material)
  • Organise and facilitate online and in person meet ups of the Coiste Gnó
  • Liaise with the Coiste Gnó and support them to fulfil their mandate (including the development of policies relating to issues that are affecting students)
  • Support members and the Coiste Gnó in developing good working habits and relationships; facilitate and mediate in the event of disputes or conflict
  • Organise and facilitate national events to help support and promote the voice of students across the nation
  • Organise and facilitate Skills Academy each year which involves planning a three-day overnight event and organising workshops
  • Report to the Executive Director / Board of Directors on the above and compile data reports and evaluations when necessary
  • Contribute to stand-alone ISSU initiatives and projects as appropriate
  • Any other reasonable tasks and duties appropriate to the role

Reporting Relationships

The National Student Voice Development Organiser reports to the Executive Director

Travel

Regular travel within Ireland (approximately 5-10 overnights per year).

Requirements

Essential

  • A minimum of two years’ experience with a youth, student, or educational organisation, ideally working directly with adolescents
  • Knowledge and experience of the Irish education system and the voluntary/non-profit/youth work sector
  • Demonstrated organising, event planning, budgeting, and execution skills
  • Knowledge of the political system and current affairs relevant to education and issues that affect students
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to ISSU’s objectives with a particular passion for improving youth participation and the student voice in the democratic process
  • Demonstrated ability, initiative, and motivation
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent expressive and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong presentation and group facilitation skills as well as ICT proficiency
  • Proficiency in social media platforms or willingness and capacity to learn
  • Good problem-solving and decision-making skills

Desirable but not essential

  • Third level degree, ideally in community development, youth work or in a relevant educational or social sector discipline
  • Experience providing, developing, and facilitating training
  • A full clean driver’s license
