Job Description - TTCPS Trainee Clinical Perfusion Scientist

We are searching for a dynamic, highly motivated, hardworking and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a trainee clinical perfusion scientist. The post is a 2 year fixed term training contract on a full time basis (35 hour week).

The successful candidate will after completion of the appropriate training become fully conversant with perfusion techniques involving adult patients. These techniques include cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage, blood conservation strategies and intra-aortic balloon pumps.

Following qualification employment prospects in Galway University Hospital are promising for a person who successfully completes the training programme and who during training consistently demonstrates the required competencies.

Essential Qualifications and Education

  • Minimum of a BSc (Hons) within a relevant life/biological sciences field for entry to the school of clinical perfusion sciences at the University of Bristol.
  • Must register as a trainee/overseas limited registrant with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • Must register with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland as a trainee/overseas limited registrant for the duration of the Perfusion Science Course.
  • You will follow the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland’s training programme. This involves the successful attainment of the PGCert/ MSc. in clinical perfusion science, while maintaining a professional clinical portfolio with onsite support and training at the GUH. Following on from this you will be required to undertake the professional body’s practical and Viva Voce examination to gain accreditation status for autonomous clinical practice.

The training programme is delivered in a blended learning format, utilising both distance (online) learning and campus-based teaching. Trainees will be required to attend Bristol for several one-week blocks during the learning period for lectures/tutorials/workshops/exams.

In addition to the academic component, candidates are required to complete a clinical training programme with the team at Galway University Hospital. This consists of on-site supervised practical training.

Upon successful completion of the PGCert/MSc programme and the professional accreditation examination (practical and viva voce, candidates can be entered onto the Register of practicing Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • If English is not your first language, a predetermined profile level set by University of Bristol with required levels of English is a requirement for application to qualify for a place on the PG Cert programme. Typically, English language proficiency test IELTS/OET should have been obtained before application, and within two years of the start date of the programme. Proof of which must be available on request.

Initial assignment will be to Galway University Hospital.

The successful candidate may be required to work in any service area within the vicinity as the need arises.

There is currently a whole-time 2 year fixed term vacancy available in this location.

On successful completion of the MSc. Clinical Perfusion Science, agrees to a full-time permanent post as Clinical Perfusion Scientist, based in Galway University Hospitals.

A panel may be formed as a result of this campaign for Galway University Hospitals from which current and future specified purpose vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled.
