We are delighted to announce that Bon Secours Hospital Cork is commencing Cardiothoracic surgery in 2024. We have an exciting new opportunity for a Clinical Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist in Cardiothoracic Surgery to join our team.

The successful candidate will be a skilled and dedicated Clinical Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist with sufficient expertise to establish and evaluate our new cardiothoracic physiotherapy service. They will be guiding our respiratory physiotherapy team in service delivery. Continual education for all the weekend respiratory physiotherapists is an integral part of this role. Our respiratory physiotherapy team works closely with consultants, GP’s, individual departments throughout the hospital & community services to provide an integrated approach to the care of all patients.

The Clinical Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist in Cardiothoracic surgery will:

  • Develop, manage and evaluate our cardiothoracic physiotherapy service. 
  • Establish protocols & guidelines for new cardiothoracic service in line with evidence-based practice and JCI and in conjunction with MDT colleagues
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills within ICU / Critical Care setting especially in Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Provide an expert clinical lead for our respiratory physiotherapy service
  • Act as an education and quality resource for respiratory physiotherapy service, MDT team and service users
  • Be responsible for supervision and development of respiratory physiotherapy team
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice through the process of clinical reasoning and decision making, allowing knowledge to be applied to complex/different situations
  • Develop strong links across the medical, nursing & MDT and to negotiate evidence-based changes in clinical practice such as referral/clinical pathways
  • Exercise a high degree of professional autonomy in the analysis of highly complex facts or situations that contribute to the implementation of a treatment or management strategy for the service user.
  • Is strategic in how he/she goes about influencing others: shows strong listening and sensing skills.

The successful candidate will form an integral part of the team & will possess:

  • Have CORU Physiotherapy membership.
  • Have at least 5 years post graduate experience in an acute hospital of which 3 years full time in Respiratory.
  • Post graduate qualification in Respiratory and Cardiothoracic is desirable
  • Post graduate experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery is desirable
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.
