What does our Communications Team do?

The Communications team works with all teams across Barnardos to co-ordinate all external communications – media, digital and campaigns. We manage Barnardos Press Office, Digital Activity, PR and media relations. We are Barnardos voice online. We work to build Barnardos brand and increase awareness and understanding of Barnardos work with children and families.

What is our overall aim?

We aim to increase understanding and awareness of Barnardos work with children and families, to engage and grow support for Barnardos fundraising and advocacy activities and to maintain and protect Barnardos good reputation.

What will the Head of Digital do?

The head of digital is responsible for the strategic planning, management and development of Barnardos website, e-mail communication tools and digital media channels. The website is the first port of call for many people approaching us. The head of digital oversees the development of the main website as well as associated web platforms; our presence on social media sites and work with any external agencies where necessary on the development of the website and email communication platform. They have 2 direct reports, The Digital Executive and the Digital Communications Assistant.

Who does the Communications team currently consist of?

The team currently consists of a Communications Manager, a Communications Executive, a Head of Digital, a Digital Executive and a Digital Communications Assistant.

Job Description

Post: Head of Digital (Maternity Cover)

Location: Dublin, hybrid – with travel required from time to time.

Responsible to: Communications Manager

Works with: Communications department and interacts with all other departments across Barnardos

Job purpose

Play a key role within Barnardos Communications team to lead the digital functions and deliver on the objectives of Barnardos Organisational Strategy.

Core Job Requirements

Responsible for creating and implementing a dynamic organisation-wide digital communications strategy supporting our organisational strategy and objectives and ensuring our mission, message and brand are used professionally and effectively across the digital landscape. Working as part of the wider Communications team.

Website

  • Oversee the architecture of the website to ensure that stakeholders can find what they want easily and that content is dynamic and engaging. Working with the external web agency to ensure the smooth running of the website.
  • Work closely with children’s service delivery teams, ensuring these services are a focal point of the main website.
  • Devise and commission analytical website reports that can be used to inform our development
  • Understand the needs of different audience types and plan content that meets their needs.

Social media

  • Ensure the strategic and tactical use of social media to manage our key messaging, enhance our reputation and to respond quickly and decisively to counter any inaccurate or potentially damaging comments.
  • Utilise social media to generate fundraising income
  • Ad creation and tracking and experience in Facebook fundraisers monitoring performance
  • Analyse, measure and report on social media activity.

Digital marketing

  • Oversee content production, work with key organisation stakeholders from service delivery and fundraising, identifying need and the most effective usage and ensuring the stories of Barnardos beneficiaries/ service user are told in a respectful and truthful manner.
  • Analyse and interpret data from Google Analytics, and communicate results to the wider team. This involves designing queries, running reports, understanding the limitations of the data, spotting trends and explaining them in an easily understandable manner.
  • Evaluate, introduce and test new technologies and channels as they become available or relevant to communications objectives.
  • Innovation – Keep up to date with current trends and developments and ensure we remain timely and current in our use of digital media.
  • Experience in digital fundraising methods a bonus.

Managing people and resources

  • Manage the digital function – Two direct reports the Digital Executive and Digital Communications Assistant. To guide and ensure they work effectively and professionally in their respective roles and have the right tools to carry out their duties in the areas of (but not limited to):
  • Online shop
  • Campaigns
  • Brand development
  • Data Protection
  • Measurement and Analysis
  • Project manage other web/digital initiatives when they arise.
  • Work with IT to oversee web hosting and develop intranet capability and roll it out to users as required.
  • Communicate with all levels of staff throughout the charity both regionally and at the National Office This can involve championing the digital strategy with senior stakeholders, presenting concepts to senior audiences or representing the director of fundraising & communications at internal and external meetings.
  • Work with external agencies to oversee ongoing work on SEO, Google Analytics 4 and Google ads (grant)

Other

  • Be responsible for the digital assigned budget
  • To work in accordance with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) to ensure all new systems are reported to the data protection executive.
  • Any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, the title of the post and its grading as requested by the director.

  • To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of the Barnardos Designated Person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policies.
  • To participate in the efficient flow of information within the organisation by sharing and seeking information as appropriate
  • To undertake other duties as may be requested by the line manager from time to time
  • To undertake your work in a manner that is friendly, flexible and informal.

  • Experience in the voluntary sector, an advantage.

Qualifications

Relevant 3 rd level qualification in a related field essential.
