Job Description - Senior House Officer

Overview of Role

UPMC Whitfield requires a Senior House Officer (SHO) . This fixed term role is suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a career in this specialty and are in early stages of their careers preparing for examinations or carrying out research activities. The person in this role would acquire significant experience and exposure to a large variety of elective procedures in pre-op, intra-op and post operative settings. This role involves regular daily attendance and taking part in on call rosters. There are opportunities to get involved in education, training and research activities. 

This is a 12 month fixed term contract.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Applicants must be fully registered with the Irish Medical Council holding a valid registration.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Must possess competent clinical and interactive skills with adult and pediatric patients.
  • Effective team player both as a facilitator and in the course of work.
  • Competent to work autonomously when required under consultant supervision/advice.
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to motivate, influence, inspire and encourage different ways of working.
  • Ability to prioritize and to deliver to short deadlines.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Completion of Mandatory Training as required by UPMC Management, including but not limited to:
  • Fire Training - Annual
  • Radiation Safety Training - Annual
  • Infection Prevention and Control Training - Annual 
  • BCLS Training - Biennial
  • ICHGCP Training - Biennial
  • ICORG PI Training - Triennial
  • Manual Handling and Patient Movement Training - Triennial 

Qualifications and Experience

Candidate Specification 

Qualifications:

  • Appropriate undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification that enables full registration with the Irish Medical Council on the General Current Register with the Irish Medical Council (Copy of Certificate)
  • Current Medical Indemnity Insurance (Copy of Certificate from HR)
  • Current Certificate of Compliance with Professional Competence Scheme
  • Current Documents certifying compliance with mandatory training programs (BLS, GCP, Radiation Safety, Fire Safety etc.)

Experience:

Appropriate post registration clinical experience as determined by the Medical Director.

General Personal Competencies:

  • Provision of an open caring environment for all referred patients, where proper explanation of treatment approach, careful treatment delivery and appropriate follow up is provided under consultant guidance
  • All posts in UPMC Whitfield require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager and / or hospital management. 
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with patient and employee or any other information in accordance with all UPMC Whitfield policies and procedures.

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide medical services within the scope of the Departmental Policies for the provision of care in the inpatient and outpatient settings at UPMC Whitfield, Hospital Waterford. 
  • Provide thorough clinical evaluation, careful explanation to patients and family and collaborative decision making when necessary, for the proper delivery of surgical and medical services to the patients in our facility.
  • Complete documentation of patients' assessment, history and physical on admission, and write appropriate follow up comments in case notes in line with the assessment of Patient Policy.
  • Diagnose and treat patients under the direction of the relevant consultant.
  • Initiate and monitor treatment as clinically appropriate and safe.
  • Liaise with other clinical disciplines within the hospital (Anesthetists, Nursing, diagnostic Services, Laboratory, Pharmacy) in relation to patient care.
  • Respond to all Code Blues and lead the nursing staff in emergency/cardiac arrest procedures.
  • Provide cover on a rostered basis to always ensure on-site SHO presence when there are patients being treated. Participate in an on-call roster.
  • Assist consultants in theatres when required

  • Be aware of infection prevention and control policies, practices, and guidelines appropriate for your duties and you must always follow these to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention and control, policies, practices, and procedures through attendance at annual mandatory updates and ongoing continuing professional development.
  • Challenge poor infection prevention and control practices of others and to report any breaches, using appropriate UPMC mechanisms (e.g., incident reporting policy). 

Information Governance

Unauthorized disclosure of any of this information may be deemed as a criminal offence. 
  • Information Quality and Records Management - You must ensure that all information handled by you is accurate and kept up-to-date and you must comply with the UPMC recording, monitoring, validation and improvement schemes and processes. 

Medication management

  • Adhere to all Medication Policies relevant to your role.
  • Verify and document patient's current medication on admission.
  • Will verify all prescribed medication.
  • Give medication advice to patients on discharge.

Professional Standards and Performance Review

  • Participate in statutory and mandatory training as appropriate for the post.

  • Participation in Departmental Educational Meetings.
  • Mandatory Clinical and non-Clinical Training (BLC, GCP, Fire safety etc.)
  • UPMC/D3 e-Rounds
  • Other education activity (Conferences, lectures etc.) to meet the requirements of the statutory rules regarding Professional Competence Assurance, as well as to acquire and maintain the necessary skills relevant to the proper function of UPMC Whitfield Hospital
  • Participation, within the departmental framework and guidelines, in research which may be multi-institutional (ICORG) or internal.
