Responsibilities
Act as an expert clinical resource for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), providing leadership, guidance and role modelling best practice across the hospital.
Advise on the management of patients with communicable diseases, including isolation requirements, transmission-based precautions and safe patient transfers.
Support staff in the implementation of IPC policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and SOPs, ensuring effective communication and referral pathways.
Lead and support the development, implementation and monitoring of IPC standards in line with national healthcare and infection control regulations.
Identify IPC risks, implement mitigation strategies, and contribute to outbreak investigation, surveillance programmes and IPC breach management.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, Occupational Health and Health & Safety to maintain high standards of hygiene, staff safety and environmental IPC controls.
Advocate for patients, families and staff by promoting safe, high-quality IPC practices and a culture of patient safety.
Develop and deliver IPC education and training programmes, using audit and surveillance findings to support staff competence and continuous improvement.
Participate in IPC audit, research and surveillance activities, including data collection, analysis, reporting and dissemination of evidence-based practice.
Maintain professional accountability through compliance with governance frameworks, confidentiality requirements, NMBI standards, ongoing CPD and service development initiatives.
Registered on the General Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
A minimum of five yearsâ post-registration clinical nursing experience.
Post-registration Level 9 (NQAI Major Award) qualification in Infection Prevention and Control, or a willingness to enter into a contractual agreement to complete the qualification within three years.
Demonstrated clinical, managerial and administrative competence relevant to the role.
Evidence of ongoing commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
