Diesel Mechanic (Marine / Fishing Fleet)

Salary:        €45,000 – €60,000 (DOE) Dependent on Experience

About the Company

Our client operates a well-established commercial fishing fleet based in the South East of Ireland. The fleet consists of inshore fishing vessels ranging from approximately 12–16 metres in length, equipped with marine diesel propulsion systems, hydraulic fishing equipment, trawl winches, net handling gear and onboard auxiliary systems.
This is a predominantly shore-based role, carrying out maintenance, diagnostics and repairs while vessels are in port. It offers the opportunity to work on a varied range of marine equipment without spending extended periods offshore.
 
Job Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and repairing marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, hydraulic equipment and vessel machinery to ensure the fleet remains operational, safe and compliant.
You will work on fishing vessels fitted with medium-powered marine diesel engines typically ranging from 250–700 HP, including equipment commonly manufactured by Scania, Volvo Penta, Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere and Iveco.
 
Key Responsibilities

•    Service, maintain and repair marine diesel engines and associated systems
•    Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out breakdown repairs
•    Inspect and maintain propulsion systems, shafts, bearings and steering components
•    Troubleshoot hydraulic systems including fishing winches, net haulers and auxiliary equipment
•    Carry out preventative maintenance programmes across the fleet
•    Diagnose and repair starters, alternators, charging systems, sensors and control circuits
•    Service pumps, cooling systems, fuel systems and turbochargers
•    Inspect vessel machinery for wear, corrosion and operational defects
•    Respond to urgent repair requirements when vessels are docked
•    Assist with annual maintenance and vessel refit programmes
•    Ensure all work is completed to marine safety and operational standards

Requirements

•    Right to work in Ireland
•    Proven experience as a Diesel Mechanic, Marine Engineer, HGV Mechanic, Plant Fitter or Agricultural Mechanic
•    Strong mechanical fault-finding skills
•    Experience working on diesel engines and associated systems
•    Ability to diagnose hydraulic and mechanical faults
•    Basic to intermediate electrical diagnostic capability
•    Ability to carry out basic/Intermediate welding tasks 
•    Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively 

 

Desirable Experience
•    Marine diesel engine experience
•    Commercial fishing vessel maintenance experience
•    Experience on Scania, Volvo Penta, Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere or Iveco engines
•    Knowledge of hydraulic winches, deck machinery and fishing equipment
•    Welding and fabrication experience
•    Marine engineering or mechanical trade qualification
