Job Description - Microbiology Registrar

Job Role

The Microbiology Registrar will be responsible for supporting the clinical microbiology service, including diagnostic microbiology, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship. The role offers hands-on experience in clinical liaison, interpretation of laboratory results, and the management of infectious diseases under the supervision of Consultant Microbiologists.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Liaise with clinical teams across the hospital regarding microbiology results and infection management.

  • Participate in daily review of microbiology cultures and laboratory reports.

  • Advise on the appropriate use of antimicrobial therapy under consultant supervision.

  • Participate in ward rounds with the Infection Prevention and Control Team.

  • Assist in the management of hospital outbreaks of infection.

Laboratory Duties:

  • Assist in the interpretation of microbiological tests, including culture, serology, and molecular diagnostics.

  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance activities and audits.

  • Collaborate with laboratory scientists to ensure accurate and timely reporting of results.

Infection Prevention & Control:

  • Support the implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) policies.

  • Participate in IPC surveillance and outbreak investigations.

  • Attend IPC and antimicrobial stewardship meetings as required.

Education & Training:

  • Participate in teaching sessions, journal clubs, and case discussions.

  • Supervise and support junior doctors, medical students, and laboratory staff where appropriate.

  • Engage in continuous professional development and meet training requirements set by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI).

On-Call:

  • Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota for clinical microbiology, as per departmental schedule.

Job requirements

Essential:

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.

  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Irish Medical Council.

  • Minimum of 2 years' post-internship clinical experience.

  • Experience in general medicine, infectious diseases, or a relevant specialty.

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to professional development.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in microbiology, infectious diseases, or laboratory medicine.

  • Enrolment in, or eligibility for, Higher Specialist Training (HST) in Clinical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.

  • Experience with infection prevention and control or antimicrobial stewardship.
