This role provides site-level technical leadership across polymer science, formulation engineering, analytical chemistry, and material science, helping teams solve complex problems, translate concepts into robust solutions, and deliver safe, effective, and manufacturable products.\n\nThe Principal Chemist acts as a technical mentor for engineers and chemists across the organisation, providing both technical and behavioural leadership. This role builds strong internal and external partnerships, facilitates cross-functional execution, and represents the site with credibility and professionalism in global forums.\n\n \n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\n \n\n\u00b7 Lead the design, optimisation, and scale-up of chemical processes for new and existing products, ensuring safety, quality, and manufacturability.\n\n\u00b7 Independently plan and execute laboratory, pilot-scale, and plant-relevant experiments, including DoE, reaction optimisation, workup design, and product characterisation.\n\n\u00b7 Serve as a technical lead for assigned processes or projects, providing expert input to Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.\n\n\u00b7 Analyse and improve existing manufacturing processes using advanced chemistry, process engineering principles, and Lean Six Sigma tools.\n\n\u00b7 Lead technology transfer activities from development to manufacturing, ensuring robust process understanding and successful implementation.\n\n\u00b7 Proactively troubleshoot complex process deviations, leading root cause investigations and defining sustainable corrective actions.\n\n\u00b7 Define, justify, and defend critical process parameters (CPPs) to support validation activities, regulatory submissions, and process robustness.\n\n\u00b7 Implement and enhance process monitoring strategies, including PAT and statistical trending, to drive control and continuous improvement.\n\n\u00b7 Author and review technical reports, SOPs, batch documentation, and validation protocols, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.\n\n\u00b7 Provide technical mentoring and guidance to junior chemists and operations staff, supporting capability development across the team.\n\n\u00b7 Represent Process Chemistry in cross-functional forums, risk assessments, and project reviews.\n\n \n\nEducation \u0026 Experience:\n\n \n\n\u00b7 Hons Bachelor\u2019s degree (Level 8 or higher) in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.\n\n\u00b7 8-10 years\u2019 experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, combination product, or similarly regulated product development and/or manufacturing environments.\n\n\u00b7 Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: polymer science, formulation engineering, analytical chemistry, material science, experimental development, or analytical development.\n\n\u00b7 Proven experience taking materials, formulations, processes, or analytical methods from concept or early development through pilot-scale and into commercial medical device applications.\n\n\u00b7 Hands-on experience in pilot, multipurpose, and/or analytical testing laboratory environments is highly desirable\n\n\u00b7 Strong track record in structured problem solving, root cause investigation, experimental design, technical troubleshooting, and cross-functional decision-making\n\n\u00b7 Proven ability to influence teams and stakeholders across functions and levels, including internal and external partners, without direct line-management responsibility.\n\n\u00b7 Excellent technical writing, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.\n\nAs a leader in medical science for more than 40 years, we are committed to solving the challenges that matter most \u2013 united by a deep caring for human life.
