We are urgently seeking an Senior Occupational Therapist  for a hospital located in Westmeath, Ireland.




Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy assessments for patients with complex rehabilitation, discharge planning, and functional needs, including cognition, ADLs, IADLs, psychosocial, and environmental factors.



  • Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based, patient-centred rehabilitation programmes using advanced clinical reasoning and validated assessment tools to maximise independence and functional outcomes.



  • Assess and support patients in activities of daily living (ADLs), recommending appropriate assistive equipment, adaptive techniques, and compensatory strategies to promote safety and independence.



  • Evaluate and facilitate safe transfers, mobility, positioning, seating, and environmental adaptations, working collaboratively with Physiotherapists, Nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT).



  • Complete functional and home environment assessments, including kitchen and domestic task evaluations, and coordinate equipment provision and community supports to enable safe discharge.



  • Provide specialist occupational therapy advice and actively contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, complex case discussions, discharge planning, and continuity of care across hospital and community services.



  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation and deliver services in compliance with CORU standards, hospital policies, professional guidelines, and evidence-based practice.



  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, quality improvement initiatives, risk management, policy development, and service evaluation to enhance rehabilitation services.



  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, education, and mentorship to junior staff, students, carers, and multidisciplinary colleagues, promoting best practice in rehabilitation and patient care.



  • Maintain professional competence through continuous professional development (CPD), mandatory training, and active participation in service development to ensure high-quality, patient-focused occupational therapy services.







Requirements




  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognised institution.



  • Current registration with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council).



  • Minimum of three years' post-qualification experience in Occupational Therapy, preferably in rehabilitation, acute care, older persons, neurology, step-down, or community settings.



  • Demonstrated experience in conducting comprehensive functional assessments and developing individualised rehabilitation plans.



  • Strong knowledge of discharge planning processes, community support services, and equipment provision pathways.



  • Experience in seating and posture management, environmental assessments, adaptive equipment prescription, and functional rehabilitation.



  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality patient care.



  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or supporting junior Occupational Therapists, students, or support staff is desirable.



  • Sound understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement, audit, risk management, and evidence-based practice.



  • Excellent communication, organisational, problem-solving, and leadership skills with a strong commitment to patient-centred care and continuous professional development.
