Software Developer

Job Description - Software Developer

ElectroRoute is an international, renewables-focused, energy trading and services company.  The company employs 90 energy professionals based in Ireland, the UK, and Europe and is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation.

ElectroRoute intelligently leverages the benefits of new technologies, our advanced methodologies, and the application of unrivalled expertise to develop innovative energy trading and renewable risk management solutions. These mitigate the factors which impede clean energy investment and help make net zero a reality.

Our expert trading team operates 24x7 in Ireland, the UK, and across Continental Europe; utilising our bespoke trading platform, ElectroRoute CORE, to provide essential trading services to wind farms, solar farms, and batteries.

The company is a significant commodity trader on its own account – trading a range of energy commodities including Power and Gas, in the global energy markets with activities spanning Europe and Japan.

Our ambitious growth plans will see us increasing the volume and variety of our activities over the coming years, requiring growth in the strength and depth of our team to help us make net zero a reality.

The Position

ElectroRoute is seeking an experienced, solutions-driven Software Developer to join the Applications Team, reporting to the IT Development Manager. This is a permanent, full-time role and offers the opportunity to be part of a growing team that is focused on supporting our energy trading businesses. ElectroRoute is committed to the ongoing development of its people, and the successful candidate will be supported with training and performance development to grow their technical and professional skills throughout their career with us.

Role Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will work independently in multiple areas of the business. Our model is one of end-to-end ownership: the developer handles initial requirements gathering, through development and testing, to deployment — remaining in direct contact with the user throughout to ensure the delivered solution meets their requirements. A solid understanding of the full software development lifecycle is therefore essential.

  • Python programming experience is essential. A willingness to work with and develop proficiency in other languages/technologies is required. Experience working with databases and at least one SQL language is required.

  • Our production infrastructure is based in the AWS cloud. AWS experience is not essential, but experience with at least one cloud-based platform (e.g. AWS, Azure) would be highly desirable.

  • The role will involve extensive collaboration across the IT, Trading and Business teams.

  • We support a 24x7x365 business. While out of hours work is not the norm, there are occasions when it may be necessary.

  • The successful candidate will gain valuable insight into the real-time operations of a dynamic energy trading company, benefiting from the knowledge and expertise that this unique environment provides.

The Successful Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • 3–5 years' commercial software development experience

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline

  • Strong programming experience in Python

  • Enthusiasm for working with and learning other languages and technologies

  • Experience with databases (e.g., MySQL, SQL Server, SQL)

  • Experience with version control, preferably Git

  • Experience with automated testing

  • Good understanding of the full software development lifecycle

  • Excellent numeric and analytical ability and strong attention to detail

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work independently on own initiative, using good judgement and discretion

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to prioritise work in pursuit of deadlines

  • Adaptable and enthusiastic about expanding knowledge across new domains and evolving working practices

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience with at least one cloud-based platform (e.g. AWS, Azure)

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code

  • Knowledge of the energy, electricity, or other commodity sectors

Location

The role will be based in Co-Lab, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Diversity & Inclusion

ElectroRoute is an equal opportunity employer. We aim to create value through diversity and inclusion. We seek to attract candidates to reflect the diverse nature of our society. Diversity and inclusion allow the ElectroRoute team to be curious, creative, and promote positive change. We understand the many demands on all our employees, and we adopt flexible working arrangements where possible. Working at ElectroRoute offers something special for everyone.
