Job Description - Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Role summary

The Trainee Quantity Surveyor is responsible for supporting the Senior Project Quantity Surveyor in carrying out cost management duties across projects.

Key responsibilities and duties

  • Assist the Senior Quantity Surveyor in the commercial management of projects, including the preparation of cost estimates, budgets, and tender documentation
  • Attend project meetings, contribute constructively by offering suggestions when appropriate, and accurately document meeting minutes
  • Monitor project tasks and action items, track progress against agreed timelines, and provide regular updates on status and milestones
  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation, ensuring information is current, organised, and accessible.
  • Prepare and deliver weekly and monthly reports, providing relevant data and insights to site teams, stakeholders, and external partners
  • Engage in continuous learning by keeping up to date with industry best practices, regulatory changes, and advancements in quantity surveying methodologies
  • Support on-site health & safety compliance, take personal responsibility for health and safety at work, and ensure all decisions align with a safe working environment
  • Maintain a professional image in all interactions with the public, contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders, representing the company positively
  • Carry out other ad hoc duties as required by the Company to support project delivery and team objectives
  • Currently studying towards or recently completed a degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of construction processes, cost planning, and commercial management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word; familiarity with construction software (e.g., Buildsoft, CostX, or similar) is an advantage
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document meeting minutes and prepare reports
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including site teams, clients, and suppliers
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, track progress, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and a methodical approach to managing records and documentation
  • Enthusiastic with a proactive, can-do attitude
  • Willingness to take initiative and suggest improvements where appropriate
  • Demonstrates a high standard of personal presentation and professionalism in all interactions
