Job Description - Power BI Developer

Unijobs on behalf of our public sector client are currently recruiting for a Power BI Developer to support our client to design, develop and deploy BI (business intelligence) solutions, including reporting tools & analysis reporting models. The duration of this post is initially 24 months with the high possibility of extension thereafter.

Working 35 hours per week the successful candidate will be employed as an agency employee and will be paid an hourly rate of €29.87 based on an annualised salary of €54,548 and will accrue 30 days' annual leave per year (plus paid Bank holidays). The successful candidate will be based in Galway City Centre. Blended working available following initial probation.

Purpose of the Post

The successful candidate will assist in transforming the approach to storing, tracking, analysing and presenting data for our client and support the maintenance, updating and management of data.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Understand business requirements in the BI context & design data models, converting raw data into meaningful insights.
  2. Assist in the identification of KPIs & other measurements, with clear objectives.
  3. Design, develop & maintain interactive dashboards & reports via Power BI to share data with internal & external stakeholders.
  4. Develop & administer visualisations and reports through Power BI & Excel, based on our clients datasets, to support decision making.
  5. Use Power BI to collate, connect, shape & interpret complex data sets.
  6. Perform data analysis expressions (DAX) queries and functions in Power BI.
  7. Integrate Power BI with available platforms (e.g. Teams, SharePoint etc.) & other applications to create automated & streamlined data flow.
  8. Monitor applications, dashboards & other reporting tools to ensure reliability & performance of information sharing systems & respond to issues & system failures proactively.
  9. Carry out Extract, Transform & Load (ETL) of data from existing systems & other sources to the centralised systems used by the Unit, including assisting with the design of new systems.
  10. Process and analyse data and metadata and report on this.
  11. Assist with the development & drafting of annual, quarterly, weekly & other (ad-hoc) reports on the implementation/progress of the Programme. Extensive use is made of Microsoft Excel in reporting at present, including the use of advanced functions such as Pivot Tables/Charts, VLOOKUP, charting. It is intended that this will transition to Microsoft Power BI.
  12. Extract & collate data to assist the Manager in responding to internal & external queries

Role Specific Criteria

  • A Bachelor of Science qualification in computer science or information systems. A non-degree qualified candidate will be considered if they possess appropriate & significant experience.
  • Be skilled in Power BI (or an equivalent application), creating data-rich dashboards.
  • Be skilled in implementing Row-level Security (RLS) in Power BI (or an equivalent application).
  • Minimum experience of two or three years' working with BI tools, data modelling, business intelligence, SQL querying, data warehousing, & online analytical processing (OLAP).
  • An ability to drill down on data and visualise it in the best possible way through charts, reports or dashboards.
  • Possess an understanding of software development, architecture and its technical aspects.
  • A post-graduate qualification in the related field of database management, data analytics is desirable.
  • It would be advantageous to be skilled in writing DAX expressions, developing custom BI products with scripting and programming languages such as R, Python, etc.

  • Up to date knowledge, best practices & advancements in development and design.
  • Detailed understanding of data types and structures.
  • Experience in documenting, designing and modelling solutions and explaining, representing and administering these in a team based environment.
  • Experience of applying experience and knowledge to future solution considerations.
  • Knowledge and experience of data management, integration and Extract/ Transform/ Load (ETL).
  • Knowledge and experience of data analysis.
  • Experience of report preparation and other documentation.
  • Significant experience in using MS Power BI (or an equivalent application).
  • Very strong proficiency in MS Excel, & be comfortable working with VLOOKUP & Pivot Tables.
  • Experience of preparing presentations using MS PowerPoint.
  • Collaborative working using MS Teams or Zoom.
  • Fully proficient in elements of Office 365.
  • Experience in Relational Databases (desirable).
  • Experience in Microsoft Power Apps and/ or Power Automate (desirable).
