We are recruiting a Sports Centre Manager (SCM) for our Aungier St. Hub. 

Reports to: Development Director Direct Reports:

Location: Aungier St, Dublin 2 

We are recruiting a Sports Centre Manager (SCM) for our Aungier St. Hub. This new post is a two-year contract, with renewal subject to funding.

YMCA Fitness Aungier st; City Gym with Fitness Studio, Sports hall catering to basketball, indoor soccer, badminton and group fitness classes. Studio space catering to dance classes and group fitness classes. Open; Monday to Thursday; 7.30am to 10pm. Friday; 7.30am to 8pm. Saturday 9.30am to 4.30pm 

SCM will have 3 main objectives;  

1) Re-Imagine and revitalise the YMCA Commercial Fitness offering. 

2) Weave fitness into the work of the wider YMCA service mix by; Assessing the opportunities to collaborate and innovate in the delivery & development of sports camps, children's fitness etc. with our Childcare and Youth services. 

3) Balance objectives 1 & 2 so that the Fitness service provides a sustainable social enterprise dividend and social gain through a newly evolved community fitness offering. 

Organisational Context; YMCA Dublin has been working with young people for 175 years. Services include youth work, education, family support, community childcare & community employment. To support our services, we operate Gym & Childcare at our Aungier St Hub. Our strategic plan (2019-26) sets the goal of establishing 3 new purpose-built community hubs offering a wide range of community activities and facilities, including high-quality childcare. If we get our community fitness offering right there is also a possibility of this being included in new YMCA Hubs.

Job Purpose: An exciting opportunity for an engaging, personable and self–motivated individual to lead in assessing, reviewing and revitalising our Fitness social enterprise. Maximise the income streams of Aungier St Sports Centre gym, classes, sports Hall & studio hire and usage. Lead the Fitness team through this transition and ensure statutory compliance & that fit-for-purpose facilities are in place for our community of members, service users & employees.

Job Scope: Oversee the daily operations of YMCA Aungier St. Developing the commercial Fitness Centre operations with a view to increasing revenue & controlling costs. Leading the Fitness and facilities Centre team to deliver a high quality service to all user groups. Collaborating with other YMCA services to innovate and deliver services to young people and wider community beyond the scope of a standard gym.

Business/Social Enterprise Management: Lead our Fitness & Facilities teams to assess, review & revitalise our Fitness social enterprise model in line with our 3 stated objectives. 

Core Duties and Responsibilities; 

  • Operational responsibility for all aspects of the Fitness Centre. 
  • Regular reporting of KPIs on facility usage, financial performance, customer retention etc. 
  • Linemanage; Facilities coordinator & Fitness Team lead (and their teams) 
  • Oversee staff recruitment, training, development & appraisals. 
  • Manage, support & develop staff teams to ensure a professional service is consistently delivered. 
  • Regular customer facing shifts (to include early mornings, evenings and weekends) to best understand our customers, service users and their needs. 
  • Ensure that all Aungier St. Hub facilities are accessible, fit for purpose, & comply with all regulations. 
  • Manage the performance of external contractors. Ensure all service level agreements are met & completed in accordance with contractual terms, specifications & to agreed quality standards. 
  • Oversee cleaning of Aungier hub (through Facilities Coordinator), monitoring to ensure a high standard of cleanliness is maintained. 
  • As part of the on-call team for YMCA out of hours emergencies; Act as key holder/contact for incidents, emergencies or urgent issues. This may include responding to out of hours calls. 

Business/Social Enterprise Management;

  • Foster innovation, growth & development of Fitness Service. Increase trading activity & incomes. 
  • Focus on Customer experience and retention. 
  • Best Practices - Improve processes, policies and procedures. 
  • Customer focused approach: Create a focus on a positive customer experience for all YMCA stakeholder interactions. Provide training and revise work practices where appropriate. 
  • Identify opportunities for fitness & facilities rentals. 
  • Work with the Communications team to promote our brand, product & services. 
  • Manage budgets, including any additional budgets for project work. 
  • Develop and prepare business plans & annual budgets. (in collaboration with Development Director). 
  • Compare costs for goods and contracted services to achieve maximum value for money. 
  • Continue the development of the Facilities team capacity and expertise as point of contact for Childcare service enquiries, payments and other functions as we develop. 
  • Collaborate as required with Aungier St. Hub Services: Childcare, YouthSpaces etc. 
  • In collaboration with the Facilities team, Provide Housekeeping and other associated services to All services operating in Aungier St. 
  • Ensure Compliance with relevant Health & Safety legislation and best practice standards, carrying out risk assessments as appropriate. 

Duties and Responsibilities as part of YMCA Senior Management team; 

Leadership: Act as a role model, provide inspirational leadership, management, support and development. 

Relationships; Collaborate with YMCA service managers to innovate and develop the YMCA in line with our vision, strategy and brand. 

KPIS first 6 months;  

  • Create Fitness Business plan for our 3 stated objectives. 
  • Review service offering and opening times. 
  • Increase memberships from base levels by an agreed percentage. 
  • H&S compliance and compliance calendar set up. 
  • Risk assessment for all relevant activities set up and compliance calendar set up. 
  • Outlined staff training plan. 
  • Full review of policies and procedures. 

Essential Qualifications/Experience; 

  • Relevant Sports / Recreational / Management experience. 
  • Relevant degree level qualification. 
  • Excellent management & organisational skills. 
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative, organised, proactive, flexible and self-directed manner. 
  • Ability to analyse complex organisational challenges & present innovative solutions to these challenges. 
  • Ability to operate and lead change. 
  • Knowledge of health and safety & ability to complete risk assessments. 
  • Demonstrable ability to set and meet targets. 

Terms & Conditions: Salary for the post is €50,000- €54,000* Hours of work: 37.5 not including breaks 

* Note there is a premium in the rate for working evenings and one Saturday in four. 

Annual Leave: 25 days (inclusive of 2# YMCA leave days; Good Friday & Christmas Eve) 

Childcare: 50% discount.
