Job Description - Software Engineering Intern - CentOS/Emerging RHEL (Waterford office, Ireland)

The Red Hat Always Ready RHEL team is looking for an Intern interested in Linux systems and open source to join us in Waterford. In this role, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of important community-facing operating systems like Fedora ELN and CentOS Stream, which are critical to the Red Hat product portfolio. As an Intern, you’ll be working with a distributed team to help deliver the next version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This long-term internship will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the full development lifecycle, learn from experienced engineers, and understand the dynamics of a major open source organization.

At Red Hat, you’ll work in an environment that welcomes diverse perspectives, values great ideas, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully. Freedom and courage are two of our core values — which means you’ll have the space to take risks, explore the unknown, and grow your strengths. But being a Red Hatter is not just about bravery; it’s also about commitment and follow-through.

Red Hat’s Intern Program is a collaborative effort between the Emerging Talent team and our intern managers. The program is designed to offer a meaningful and well-rounded experience — combining professional development, networking opportunities, social engagement, and impactful work. This is a paid, full-time internship based at the respective RH offices (Cork, Waterford, Dublin), with flexible working hours. The expected start date is June 2026.

What you will do:

  • Participate in the full development lifecycle, assisting with tasks from design to release, including RPM packaging efforts for Fedora, CentOS Stream and RHEL systems.

  • Work on investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving minor issues under the guidance of a mentor, and collaborate across various teams in the organization.

  • Help with the team's continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes and automation efforts, as well as updating some of the existing tooling.

What you will bring:

  • You must be enrolled in an accredited university program in the Republic of Ireland during the full duration of the internship and must be able to join us full time from June till September/December 2026

  • Working knowledge of written and spoken English

  • Experience in Python and Bash scripting

  • Basic understanding of the Linux operating system and experience with Linux administration.

  • Familiarity with Git for version control.

  • Proactive, collaborative team player with a desire to learn and effective problem-solving skills.

Due to the limited number of internship opportunities and the high volume of applications, we may not be able to speak with every candidate. To maximize your chances of moving forward in the process, please ensure your CV clearly outlines your education, relevant projects (link to your git.hub account), and extracurricular activities.

Please apply for a maximum of three internship roles that best match your interests and skills.
