WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a Junior Research Scientist in Satellite Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Modelling for the PRESTO project. This project aims to bridge the gap between pure research and real-time civil protection needs. 
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in satellite remote sensing, numerical weather prediction, atmospheric composition modelling, and the development and assessment of advanced data assimilation methods.

He/She will contribute to research activities involving the assimilation of satellite observations in high-resolution modelling systems, support the development of preprocessing and quality-control procedures for real-time observations, and cooperate effectively with national and international research partners.

ROLE


The Research Scientist in Satellite Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Modelling will report to the Head of the REMHI Research Division and to the PRESTO Research Unit Leader. He/She will support the development and assessment of data assimiliation solutions for high-resolution atmospheric models, focusing on ICON-based convection- permitting applications and reanalysis.


RESPONSIBILITIES


The Research Scientist in Satellite Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Modelling will support the
Regional Models and geo-Hydrological Impacts Division (REMHI) with: 
  • Contribute to the development of convection-permitting atmospheric reanalysis activities based on the ICON modelling framework, including the use and assessment of data assimilation approaches for satellite, radar and other relevant observations.
  • Assist in the scientific validation of model and assimilation configurations through case studies, intercomparisons, and performance assessment.
  • Collaborate on the preparation of scientific reports, technical documentation, project deliverables, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Contribute to training, knowledge transfer, and dissemination activities in the fields of satellite meteorology, data assimilation, and high-resolution atmospheric modelling.

 
REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Meteorology, Climate Science, Remote Sensing, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent subjects.
  • Master's Degree in Physics, Atmospheric Physics and Meteorology, Environmental Physics, or equivalent subjects.
  • At least 3 years of post-master experience, including substantial research experience in satellite data assimilation, numerical modelling, remote sensing, or closely related fields.
  • Proven experience in the use of numerical models for the atmosphere, atmospheric composition, sea ice, or other geophysical components.
  • Knowledge of radiative transfer modelling and/or satellite observation simulation tools.
  • Good programming skills in scientific environments, preferably including Python and Fortran, and confident use of Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting.
  • Experience in working in international and multidisciplinary environments.
  • Working proficiency in English
  • Accuracy, analytical skills, scientific autonomy, and problem-solving attitude.
  • Experience with data assimilation in the ICON modelling framework will be considered an asset.
 
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Research Scientist will be based in Caserta CMCC office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
