This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Backend Engineer (Infra), Core Sending in Italy.
This role sits at the heart of a high-scale infrastructure team responsible for powering large-scale email delivery systems used by millions of developers worldwide. You will design, build, and operate the core backend systems that handle massive volumes of transactional and marketing emails with high reliability and low latency. The environment is highly distributed and event-driven, requiring strong expertise in scalable architectures, cloud infrastructure, and asynchronous systems. You will contribute to critical technical decisions around system design, observability, and resilience while ensuring the platform can reliably process tens of millions of messages daily. Working in a remote-first, highly autonomous team, you will collaborate closely with experienced engineers who value simplicity, ownership, and execution speed. This is a hands-on role where your work directly impacts system stability, developer experience, and global email delivery performance.
Accountabilities:
- Design and evolve the architecture supporting millions of daily API requests and large-scale email delivery workloads.
- Build and scale backend infrastructure capable of processing tens of millions of emails per day with high availability.
- Develop and optimize distributed systems, including asynchronous pipelines (queues, streams, retries, idempotency, DLQs).
- Improve system reliability through high availability design, disaster recovery planning, and fault tolerance strategies.
- Manage and scale data systems such as Postgres and ClickHouse to ensure performance and reliability under heavy load.
- Enhance observability using monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., Datadog) to ensure system health and performance.
- Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform and CDK.
- Work with TypeScript and Go to build and maintain core backend services.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support and resolve critical production issues.
Requirements:
- 8+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on cloud infrastructure and distributed systems.
- Proven experience designing and operating large-scale systems on AWS or similar cloud platforms.
- Strong expertise in event-driven architectures using tools such as Kafka, SQS, SNS, or equivalent technologies.
- Deep understanding of scalable system design, high availability, and performance optimization.
- Experience working with high-throughput systems and production-grade backend services.
- Strong programming skills in backend languages, ideally TypeScript and/or Go.
- Ability to work autonomously in ambiguous, fast-moving environments with a “default to action” mindset.
- Strong communication skills in English and ability to collaborate effectively across distributed teams.
- Comfortable participating in on-call rotations and handling production incidents.
- Low-ego, hands-on engineer with strong ownership and problem-solving mindset.
- Experience with email infrastructure or messaging systems is a plus.
