Appointment will be subject to receipt of a NATO SECRET security clearance (provided by the national
Authorities of the selected candidate) and approval of the candidate’s medical file by the CMRE
Medical Adviser.

1. POST CONTEXT
This is a position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), an
organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
CMRE is an established, world-class scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and
conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain, delivering
innovative and field tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security
needs of the Alliance.
This position is within The Engineering and Information Technology Division (EITD), which supports
the execution of the Programme of Work.
EITD consists of the Engineering Department (ED) and the Information Technology Department (ITD):
• ED addresses the engineering and technological requirements of the Centre's research activity, by
designing, developing, constructing, testing at-sea and maintaining, repairing and calibrating

electronic, oceanographic, mechanical, acoustical assemblies and unmanned systems, especially
prototypes, or combinations of such units as required.
• ITD supports the conception, design, development and construction of state-of-the-art
technologies in computing, networking and data infrastructure as well as developing, integrating,
and validating software applications, services and products. All this is done while ensuring
interoperability, security and compliance with relevant NATO policies and regulations.
The position is within the Information Technology Department, Software Development and Data
Management Section.
2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
• Create, deploy and maintain deployment and data pipelines
• Secure (hardening) operating system and application stacks, applying the security by design
• Being involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle ensuring high source code
quality
• Stays informed about latest DevSecOps practices, platforms and systems
• Supports and coordinates with scientists, architects and operational staff
• Supports CMRE sea experiment planning with a focus on software deployment and data
acquisition
• Works closely with the CMRE IT Teams as advocate by the DevOps principles
3. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES
a. Flexibility Clause
The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties even in other parts of the organization
All other related duties should correspond with the required competencies for the job.
b. Deployment/Travel
The incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels.
The incumbent may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.

4. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
a. Professional/Experience
• Professional experience in using distributed software version control system, such as GitLab,
• Professional experience in creating deployment pipelines for CI/CD using automation tools such
as GitLab-CI, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and others
• Professional experience with one or more of the following technologies: Cloud computing, Docker,
• Professional experience in one or more programming languages including Python, TypeScript, C++,
Java, Rust and C#
• Professional experience with the Linux operating system, with specific focus on security aspects
• Professional experience in one or more automatic code testing technique, such as unit tests,
acceptance tests, penetration tests, end-to-end tests, GUI tests
• Professional experience in working in an agile team
b. Education/Training
• A minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree at a nationally recognized/certified University in
software engineering, computer science or a related discipline and 1 years post-related
experience.

• Exceptionally, the lack of a university degree may be compensated by the demonstration of a
candidate’s particular abilities or experience that is/are of interest to CMRE, that is, at least 3 years
extensive and progressive expertise in duties related to the function of the post.
c. Language Requirements
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and
some knowledge of the other is desirable.
NOTE: Most of the work of CMRE is conducted in the English language.

5. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Master degree in software engineering, computer science or equivalent
• Agile methodology certification (e.g. SCRUM Master)
• Professional experience in code quality analysis and security scanning tools (e.g. Sonarqube, pre
commit hooks, Software Bill of Materials, etc.)
• Professional experience in using package repository, such as Nexus Sonatype, JFrog Artifactory,
etc.
• Professional experience with application monitoring tools and metrics (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana)
• Professional experience with architectural framework and notations such as C4, UML, etc.
• Certifications in DevOps and/or Cyber Security

7. REMARKS
The duties are mostly performed in an office environment, but staff may be required to work on-board
a vessel.

NOTE:
Irrespective of previous qualifications and experience, candidates for twin-graded posts will be
appointed at the lower grade. Advancement to the higher grade is not automatic, and will not normally
take place during the first three years of service in the post.
Under specific circumstances, serving staff members may be appointed directly to the higher grade,
and a period of three years might be reduced by up to twenty four months for external candidates.
