Reporting to: Head of Department

Purpose and Scope of the Job

Administer various type of anesthetics to render patient insensible to pain during surgical procedures, manipulation or setting of fractures, deliveries and other therapeutics and diagnostics measures.

Main Duties and Responsibilities/Performance Standards

  • Responsible for providing anesthesia care to elective as well as emergency cases
  • Ensure implementation of the Ministry of Health regulations, the hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and the Anesthesia Department Policy and Guidelines
  • Follows the standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of anesthesia
  • Exhibit appropriate personal and interpersonal professional behaviors and practice medicine ethically consistent with the obligations of a physician
  • Cooperate with other members in Anesthesia Department to work in a team directed and organized by the Head of the Department
  • Consider the patient’s safety as the first priority in his work
  • Periodically review his personal and professional performance against national standards set for the specialty
  • Include the patient in discussions concerning appropriate diagnostic and management procedures
  • Respect the opinions of fellow specialists, consultants and referring physicians in the management of patient problems and be willing to provide means whereby differences of opinion can be discussed and resolved
  • Show recognition of limits of personal skill and knowledge by appropriately consulting other physicians when caring for the patient
  • 11 Conduct studies and research program on effectiveness and usefulness of new techniques and anesthetics
  • Observe and monitor the anesthetized patient for adverse reactions, advise physicians of conditions, and initiate remedial measures
  • Participate in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care needs
  • Maintain records of anesthetic administered, condition of patients prior to and throughout anesthesia, pre-anesthetic and post anesthetic medication, and conditions of patients at close of operation
  • Administer treatment to patients in case of post anesthetic complications
  • The on-call anesthesiologists are responsible for covering the calls for 24 hours
  • Duties of the on-call anesthesiologist include:
    • Anesthetic management for emergency and elective cases. Epidural analgesia for labor and delivery.
    • Preoperative check-up for patients admitted the night before surgery and those referred by surgeons for check-up before booking/scheduling.
    • Covering calls from ER, ICU and other areas of the hospital for conditions related to anesthesia service or resuscitation.
    • Sharing in transportation, to other hospitals, of critically-ill patients liable to need cardiopulmonary resuscitation or mechanical ventilation during transportation
  • To confer with the Consultant/Specialist doctor status of the in-patient, about planning treatment and the progress of the patients
  • To accompany patients to recovery room or ICCU/SICU
  • To look after the management of pain after the surgery in co-ordination with the surgeon
  • Answer calls from the wards regarding conditions related to anesthetic care given to the patient
  • Accept all other additional assignments found necessary by the Head of Department

Qualifications, Competences and Skills

Education

MBBS and Master Degree in Anesthesiologist

Experience

1 year of experience after Master’s degree

Licensure

Language

Fluent in English and Arabic

Performance Competencies

  • Knowledge of Required Organizational practices
  • Command over professional code of ethics , medical bylaws
  • Knowledge of evidence based Age specific/ Population specific patient care clinical guidelines accepted by the hospital
  • Culturally competent ( Kuwaiti patients’ culture and beliefs)
  • AHA certified Basic Life support provider
  • AHA certified Advance Cardiac Life support provider

  • Ensures quality and patient safety practices are followed. (Note: Accreditation requirement)
  • Provides or promotes patient and family-centered care. (Note: Accreditation requirement)
  • Promotes inclusive health by providing equitable and accessible care to patients and families with special needs. ( Note : Special needs project requirement)

Principle Working Relationships and Remarks

  • Medical Administrative staff, Peers , Nurses, Clinical Ancillary staff, Customer service staff and Secretaries.
