Penerangan Pekerjaan - Registered Nurse - Midwife

Primary Role:

Provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the center of all we do.

The post holder is expected to be able to give the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during pregnancy, labor and postnatal period. You must be able to conduct deliveries on your own responsibility and to care for the new-born infant, seeking medical assistance when required.

Responsibilities:

  • To maintain high standards of Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing care within a safe environment.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • To maintain accurate clinical records.
  • To observe and abide by the Rules and Code of professional conduct of The Cayman Islands Nursing and Midwifery Council adoption of the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
  • To attend unit/team perinatal meetings working as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist mothers and families through attempts to conceive, pregnancy, and post pregnancy care.
  • Preparing women for labor, delivery and assisting with the birthing process.
  • Counseling and educating male and female patients on contraceptives, reproductive health, and family planning.
  • Assist surgeons and physicians in caring for the mother during complicated births
  • Perform CPR or other emergency measures if needed
  • Assist mothers with breastfeeding, self-care, and postpartum healthcare
  • To organize the reception, transfer and discharge of patient
  • To arrange care of clients’ property/valuables
  • To administer drugs according to the hospital policy.
  • To report accidents and complaints to the Clinical Midwife Manager of ward/department and the Chief Nurse and complete the appropriate documents relating to these.
  • To assist in maintaining adequate stock levels.
  • To liaise closely with multidisciplinary staff in the hospital and community, including general practitioners and public health nurses.
  • Documents maternity care in all assigned patient records.
  • Maintains patient's privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
  • Evaluates care given including the patient response.
  • Reassesses and documents the proposed revision of interventions and desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient's understanding and compliance with instructions and health care teaching.
  • Reviews documentation of instructions, teaching topics, and patient response with the Chief Nurse/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • The patient’s needs are individually assessed.
  • A care plan and evaluation process is planned and implemented.
  • The patient’s families/significant others are involved as appropriate.
  • Patients are cared for in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all nursing and hospital wide policies and guidelines.
  • Full nursing participation in and supervision of patient’s meal and special dietary requirements.
  • Visiting time policies are adhered to.
  • Delegation is appropriate to the skill level and knowledge of the individual to whom the task is delegated.
  • Documentation is recorded in a professional, legible and timely fashion.
  • The identification of quality/policy/guideline issues.
  • The evaluation of current practices to best practice
  • On delivery and baby care, Assessment of APGAR, Weight HEAD circumference and Chest Circumference is obtained.
  • The setting of standards utilizing structure, process and outcome.
  • All hospital, regional and national audit processes are followed.
  • Participate in Health Promotion initiatives.
  • The timely identification and communication of any issues to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
  • Demonstrate a confidence/competence in all hospital policies and guidelines.
  • Efficient recording of all necessary documentation.
  • Maintaining an effective interdisciplinary communication process.
  • Efficient utilization of pay and non-pay resources.
  • Participate in all ward and hospital nursing communication processes (ward meeting/ hospital meetings).
  • Attend in a timely manner all mandatory education sessions.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio, attend CME/CNE sessions.
  • Ensure their professional and personal persona positively reflects the profession of nursing and Doctor’s Hospital.
  • Identify potential and beneficial topics for nursing research.
  • Utilize all practical opportunities to educate the patient and their families.
  • Attend appropriate study days/courses.
  • Be a preceptor and or supervisor to students/newly appointed staff.
  • Participate in their performance review with the Chief Nurse.
  • Contribute to the identification of training needs pertinent to the clinical area.
  • Identify and contribute to the continual enhancement of learning opportunities in the clinical area.
  • Participate in the clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff
  • Assume responsibility for own learning and development needs.
  • Utilizes effective time management skills.
  • Maintains professional appearance and dress code.
  • Complies with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
  • Attends staff meetings, reads email and other posting
  • All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate.

Other Duties:

  • The employee, as part of his/her job description shall take part in the activities of any committee that he/she is assigned by his/her supervisor and is expected to attend all scheduled meetings. The employee further agrees to be an active participant in assigned activities related to CTMH Doctors Hospital attaining and maintaining Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation .

Qualifications / Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)/ with M.Sc. / P. Grad. Diploma in Midwifery.
  • Minimum 5 years Midwifery Experience (Recent or currently practicing).
  • Experience in hospital setting and understanding of hospital operations is preferred.

Accountability:

The Registered Midwife is accountable to the Chief Nurse. Secondary reporting will be to his/her designate.

Travel:

None expected.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of national strategies where appropriate to nursing care
  • Demonstrate a focus on quality.
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathize with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect all posts in Doctors Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager.
