HEAD OF SECONDARY

Purpose of Role

The Head of Secondary will be responsible for the day-to day leadership of students and staff within our Secondary School. In leading their learning community, the HOS will closely collaborate with both the Head of Academics, and Head of Pastoral, as well as department heads and other members of management. This will be in addition to working alongside the School Principal and Head of Primary (HOP) to foster an educational vision that promotes successful strategic development, effective leadership and growth throughout the school. The HOS will actively create opportunities for school enrichment by promoting innovative initiatives and leading others in creating positive change. The duties and responsibilities of this post are numerous and varied, with the expectation that the ideal candidate will demonstrate high levels of flexibility and commitment as we move forward as a school.

Key Responsibilities

This document reflects the responsibilities of a HOS across four main areas of focus:

  • Leading Learning & Teaching

Leading Teaching & Learning

  • Oversee the effective delivery, organisation and implementation of a balanced and effective curriculum that is reflective of national and international standards, in addition to our own students unique needs and backgrounds.
  • Support high quality planning, allocation, and evaluation of work undertaken by teachers, monitoring the clear delegation of tasks and responsibilities by collaborating with other members of management.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Academics to model and promote exemplary teaching standards across all subjects in order to raise standards of pupil attainment and achievement across the Secondary School.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Pastoral to identify and address areas of concern throughout the Secondary School and provide the necessary support to assess and target these issues.
  • Enhance the teaching practice of others by liaising with the School Principal, HOP and MMT to develop and deliver meaningful opportunities for CPD.
  • Provide effective leadership to all members of the Secondary School as we continue to foster an environment that supports positive communication, support and growth among staff and students.
  • Establish and implement effective school policies related to planning, assessment and other aspects of teaching and learning in order to promote best practice.

Evaluation & Strategic Development

  • Challenge underperformance at all levels and ensure effective corrective action and follow-up is put in place and has an impact on improvement.
  • Present a coherent, understandable and accurate account of the schools performance to a range of audiences including other members of SLT, The Board of Directors and the wider school community.
  • Liaise with other members of SLT and management to regularly review and promote the schools Strategic Development Plan to raise standards throughout the school.
  • Develop and implement an effective approach to appraisals and evaluations used to assess progress and areas for improvement in Secondary.
  • Manage and use data gathered to inform future teaching and learning practices in Secondary.
  • Provide regular, detailed and meaningful feedback to staff to ensure that standards are continually being raised and positive development is taking place.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Liaise closely with the School Principal, HOP and other members of the schools management to ensure frequent and clear communication.
  • Contribute to the development of a school culture which celebrates the rich diversity of our student body and academic staff.
  • Contribute to the development of the education system by sharing effective practice, working in partnership with other schools and promoting innovative initiatives, especially with our wider school community.
  • Create opportunities for meaningful parental involvement and lead other staff in establishing and maintaining positive relationships with our parent community.

Operational Duties

  • Plan and lead effective Secondary meetings, ensuring that they are properly planned and offer meaningful opportunities for staff to contribute and give feedback.
  • Ensure that the range, quality and use of all available resources is monitored, evaluated and reviewed to improve the quality of education for all pupils and provide value for money.
  • Monitor that school policies are being adhered to by staff and students correctly throughout the school day, particularly in relation to behaviour management, uniform and punctuality.
  • Promote an effective organisational structure within Primary which reflects the schools values, and enables the management systems, structures and processes to work effectively in line with school policies.
  • Recruit, retain and deploy staff appropriately, managing their workload to enable achievement of the vision and goals of the school.
  • Balance and resolve issues related to timetabling, staffing and other duties within Secondary.

The person fulfilling the role of Head of Secondary will be able to demonstrate the following attributes and leadership qualities:

  • The gravitas to inspire confidence and respect in pupils, parents and staff.
  • Experience in leading academic/ teaching and learning teams.

  • Commitment to playing a full part in the school community's life, setting an outstanding example exemplifying the school mission & vision.
  • An ability to effectively prioritise and delegate tasks according to responsibilities and deadlines.

  • Have a sense of humour, enthusiasm, self-confidence, integrity and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Continuously strives to improve themselves as a leader and engages in regular self-reflection on their practice.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., B.Ed., PGCE / QTS).
  • Minimum 5-7 years of teaching experience.
  • Ability to deliver a balanced, broad, and differentiated curriculum.
  • Skilled in providing well-planned, rigorous, and engaging learning experiences.
  • High expectations for learners, fostering inspiration and challenge.
  • Promote a well-organised and inspiring learning environment.
  • Experience integrating technology into teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset across all aspects of school life.
  • Passionate and committed to going above and beyond for the school community.
  • Ability to pass an International Child Protection Certificate (UK) to work with children & able to provide Criminal Background Check covering the previous 10 years employment history.
  • Contract: Fixed Term (2 years) renewal depending on performance
  • Able to commence in August 2024

Salary/Benefit:

  • Basic Salary : Around RM 18,000 - RM 20,000
  • Transport Allowance : RM 500
  • Housing Allowance : RM 3,000 (Single), RM 3,500 (Married)
  • EPF : 8%
