Penerangan Pekerjaan - Internship (Role of Fish Consumption in Diets of Adolescent Girls)

About WorldFish

WorldFish is a leading international research organization working to transform aquatic food systems to reduce hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. It collaborates with international, regional, and national partners to co-develop and deliver scientific innovations, evidence for policy, and knowledge to enable equitable and inclusive impact for millions who depend on fish for their livelihoods. As a member of CGIAR, WorldFish contributes to building a food- and nutrition-secure future and restoring natural resources. Headquartered in Penang, Malaysia, with country offices across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, WorldFish strives to create resilient and inclusive food systems for shared prosperity. For more information, visit: www.worldfishcenter.org

About the Role

Aquatic food consumption, especially fish consumption, plays a vital role in addressing malnutrition among vulnerable populations, including children and women of reproductive age, across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite this, there is a lack of information regarding the consumption of aquatic foods and their contributions to dietary diversity and nutrient adequacy among specific vulnerable groups. Obtaining such information is essential to continue positioning aquatic foods as acceptable, accessible, and sustainable sources of protein and micronutrients, particularly in the global south. Moreover, conducting such analyses will strengthen advocacy efforts for the inclusion of aquatic foods in policy, planning, and investment decisions at national and regional levels. WorldFish is seeking an intern to assist in conducting a study that investigates the role of fish consumption in the diets of adolescent girls in Morogoro, Tanzania. This study aims to fill the gap in knowledge regarding aquatic food consumption patterns among this specific demographic group. Additionally, the study will synthesize findings to explore the implications of fish consumption on sustainable and resilient aquatic food systems. It will also identify opportunities for enhancing food and nutrition security, promoting gender equity, and fostering sustainable livelihoods in the region.

Scope of Work

The scope of the work will encompass data cleaning, data analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission, conducted in collaboration with the project team. Over a 6-month period, the research intern will work with WorldFish’s senior scientist on nutrition and public health, as well as Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania, to contribute to the following evidence-based analyses and outputs:

  • Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature on fish consumption patterns, nutritional status, and dietary habits among adolescent girls, with a specific focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and Tanzania.
  • Data Cleaning and Analysis: Clean collected data and interviews and analyze the data using appropriate statistical methods or qualitative analysis techniques.
  • Communication: Collaborate with research partners and stakeholders in Tanzania and Malaysia to ensure the smooth delivery of expected project outputs. Effectively communicate findings, progress, and challenges with the project team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Research Output Completion: Under the guidance of the project team, prepare and submit manuscripts for journal publication, as well as presentations. Additionally, there may be opportunities to create knowledge briefs summarizing research findings. Present research findings in internal WorldFish meetings.

This internship opportunity is open to individuals with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD degree (enrolled or completed) in Global Health, Public Health, or Human Nutrition.
  • Demonstrated strong competency in data analysis, including proficiency in statistical software such as STATA or R.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with a professional approach to working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and deliver work on time.
  • This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable information and experience with an esteemed international research organization.
  • The intern will have the chance to interact and collaborate with staff from global offices, country offices, and various partners, enhancing their professional network and collaborative skills.
  • A monthly stipend in USD will be provided to support the intern during their tenure with WorldFish, ensuring their financial stability while contributing to meaningful research endeavors.

Location and Duration

The intern will work remotely. The successful candidate should be available to commence the internship as soon as possible for a duration of 6 months. This remote working arrangement allows for flexibility and accessibility, enabling candidates from diverse geographic locations to participate in this valuable internship opportunity.
