About the role

Provide legal services under the supervision of senior lawyers in the department to internal stakeholder on various areas of laws including corporate, commercial and banking with a primary focus on employment law and industrial relation litigation.

What will you do:

  • Acting as a trusted and specialist advisor to HR on employment law and industrial relation matters through provision of advice, research, drafting, and support to HR on a wide range of matters relating to employment law and industrial relations ranging from employment contract, employee benefits, disciplinary process including termination or dismissal, performance management, advising on HR policies and procedures, advising on remuneration policies, workplace harassment, grievances, occupational health and safety requirement, whistleblowing and personal data compliance.
  • Provision of research and stay abreast of the developments in employment laws, regulations, and industry trends and to ensure the Bank's HR policies and practices are aligned with current legal standards.
  • Provision of support to HR on the management of contentious cases against the Bank.
  • Provision of support to HR on all touchpoints with external counsel including participation in discussions with external counsel on litigation strategy, reviewing pleadings and cause papers prepared by external counsel, support in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Liaison support together with HR IR in liaising with Government and Labour authorities for external advice or management of HR issues or cases.
  • Provision of advice or opinion to HR where additional view is required.
  • Court attendance to support key witness from the Bank in complex cases.
  • Provide legal advice on matters relating to banking, corporate and commercial under the supervision of senior lawyers in the department. Example include: Retail Banking/Corporate Banking/Wealth Management/Treasury.
  • Provide legal advice to the banking business on product-related matters, branch queries, resolution of customer complaints, and agreement and terms and conditions.
  • Provide legal advice to the middle and back-office team supporting the banking business such as credit operation, credit risk, collection and recovery, and Shariah division.
  • Provide legal advice on internal stakeholders on their respective policy and procedure.
  • Provide legal advice and support on review of procurement related agreement.
  • Keep abreast with all new laws and regulations which may affect the Bank.
  • Analyze and disseminate the implication of laws, legislation, etc., that may affect the Bank.
  • Evaluate, advise and respond to legal notices, court orders, injunctions etc from regulators/authorities/official assignee, official receiver, liquidators/receivers & managers, solicitors and third parties.
  • Evaluate, advise and respond to any legal issues pertaining to any official complaint/demand from customers made directly to the Bank or to regulatory authorities.
  • Support Head of Division and senior lawyers in managing administrative matter within the department such as management of external solicitors, review of internal policy and procedures, managing inventory of standard legal document, managing power of attorney, managing legal reports submitted by the legal function to governance forum, risk management activity, managing review by the internal audit function on the legal department.
  • Support other team members when lawyers are away on leave.
  • From time to time to undertake any specific assignments or projects from the Head of Division.

Skills, certifications and experience you possess:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in law.
  • Certificate in Legal Practice & called to the Malaysian Bar.
  • Minimum 3 years in Legal Practice (Legal Firm).
  • Ability to analyze issues and provide reasonably pragmatic and risk-based legal advice to internal stakeholders on a range of legal issues.
  • Team player with the ability to prioritize work, especially when some deadlines need to be met.
  • Knowledge of wide range of applicable laws and regulations which impact on all facets of Bank’s operations.
  • Keeping abreast of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise.
  • Keep himself/herself updated with all the legal laws and should be able to apply them in the given situation.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient analytical, researching and drafting skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications – Words/Excel/Power Point.
  • Able to work independently.
