Job Description - Communications Strategist

As a Communications Strategist in Global Retail Communications, you play a key role in “uniting and exciting” our colleagues around Retail’s Be First strategy, leadership, culture and brand. You help position ING as the preferred bank for Retail and Business Banking customers across our Retail markets by building narrative clarity, shaping impactful moments and campaigns, and strengthening engagement across the organisation. As the most senior member of the team after the lead, you are expected to set an example for both the team and the department. You consistently raise the bar for work quality while also supporting the development and growth of junior colleagues.

The Team

Our team is responsible for driving strategic clarity through unified messaging across ING, all linked to becoming the Best European Bank and to support cultural change needed for our growth ambitions. The Communications Strategist is one of four roles within the Global Retail Communications team (1 Lead + 3 FTE). This role reports into the Head of Global Retail Communications. You work closely with Retail Banking Leadership, Group Communications, Global Brand & MarCom, Events & Experiences, and local market teams.

Roles and responsibilities

Create a sense of community, pride and excitement around strategy, brand and leadership

  • Strategic Communication & Planning

  • Develop the Retail communication strategy, narrative, and annual activation calendar together with the business teams

  • Translate global and local strategic priorities into clear communication plans.

  • Inform and engage all employees on leadership, ING strategy, and business priorities in a relevant way

  • Provide opportunities to create awareness for the three strategic Retail pillars: Business Banking, Private Individuals and Private Banking, Wealth management & Investments

Project Management & Delivery of Big Tickets

  • Organise and deliver high-impact leadership events and communication moments, specifically the Retail Rally (annual international event for our Top 200 of Retail Banking)

  • Lead cross-functional “Big Ticket” communication projects.

  • Manage stakeholders, content, timelines, milestones, dependencies, and risk.

  • Content Creation & Storytelling.

  • Create engaging, human‑centered content across channels and formats.

  • Ensure relevant and strategic publishing across internal and external channels.

External Communication & PR Activation

  • Collaborate with Media Relations to shape external leadership profiling.

  • Identify and activate PR opportunities with the Brand & Marketing team.

Stakeholder management and community building

  • Build a strong relationship with Retail leadership, specifically the global retail heads and be seen as a valuable partner and advisor for everything internal marketing and positioning

  • Drive collaboration with local marketing and comms teams

  • Facilitate sharing of market performance and build global Retail community

  • Coach and guide team members

We are looking for the following knowledge and experience:

  • At least 10 years experience in marketing communications, corporate communications

  • Experience in marketing communication, campaigns, PR and activations, preferably from a market.

  • Strong project management capabilities, skilled in project planning, stakeholder mapping, timelines and budget discipline.

  • Proven project management experience in delivering large high-stake events

  • Excellent storytelling, writing and communication skills.

  • Experience in working with advertising agencies.

  • Strong stakeholder management.

  • A human, modern communication style.

  • Fluent in English

  • You stay informed about social media trends and skillfully apply this knowledge to corporate messaging and internal communications.

  • You have strong networking skills across countries and levels.

  • You have the ability to translate strategy into objectives and deliverables.

  • You have experience in business roles, preferably retail.

  • You are able to influence and persuade based on content and personality.

  • You are comfortable working cross‑discipline and cross‑business.

  • ·You thrive in high‑paced, diverse and political environments
