Job Description - Data Lake Platform Engineer

ING Tech Netherlands operates a state‑of‑the‑art Data Lake powered by technologies such as IBM InfoSphere (DataStage and Information Governance Catalogue), Oracle Exadata, and Cognos. At the same time, we are transforming towards a cloud‑based data platform with world‑class capabilities.

This is an exciting moment to join us — you’ll work with mature, business‑critical systems while contributing to our next‑generation data landscape.

The team

As a DevOps Engineer, you will work in a product team of 6–8 professionals, typically including:

  • 3–4 DevOps Engineers
  • 2–3 Data Management Experts
  • A Product Lead who sets backlog priorities

Each squad owns a set of data sources end‑to‑end — from real‑time or batch extraction to publishing Data Marts for Cognos Reporting. We operate without a dedicated Scrum Master, so strong Agile maturity and self‑organization are essential.

Roles and responsibilities

✔ Data Analysis & Modelling

  • Analyse data and design physical models across our pipeline layers:
    • Operational Status
    • Information Warehouse
    • Data Marts
  • Apply our Key‑Version modelling approach (a hybrid of relational modelling and Data Vault).
  • Build dimensional models for Data Marts using Kimball methodology.
  • Use and implement SCD Type 3 patterns — hands‑on experience is required.

✔ Build & Deliver Data Pipelines

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy DataStage artefacts.
  • Build Cognos Analytics frameworks and packages.
  • Contribute to engineering standards and reusable components.
  • Use Azure Pipelines to automate CI/CD flows, supporting our shift toward cloud‑ready delivery and improved engineering productivity.

✔ Operations & Reliability

  • Own what you build: run, maintain, monitor, and support applications in the Data Lake.
  • Resolve incidents and fix defects.
  • Maintain operational controls in line with the bank’s risk requirements.

Your activities span analysis to operations — making you a true DevOps engineer.

Your Work Environment

At ING, engineers work in multi‑disciplinary teams following Agile and DevOps principles.
Our “Spotify model” means you are part of:

  • a product team, focused on delivery, and
  • a chapter, your community of expertise

You will be part of the Data Processing chapter, where we share knowledge, collaborate on standards, and support each other’s growth.

How to succeed
We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

You are an enthusiastic, motivated engineer who enjoys complex data integration challenges. You continuously look for smarter, more automated solutions and actively pursue personal growth.

Your mentality: Automate everything — from ingestion to testing, deployment, and operations.
Your goal is to eliminate repetitive work and create space for meaningful engineering improvements.

You naturally embody our culture of “Take it on and make it happen” and, like all ING colleagues, you adhere to our banker’s oath.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a DevOps Engineer in similar environments
  • Strong ETL experience (DataStage or comparable tooling)
  • Data modelling experience (Data Vault, dimensional modelling, etc.)
  • Experience with databases such as Oracle Exadata, Netezza, or SQL Server
  • Scheduling tools (e.g., UAC)
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Bash scripting
  • Fluent in English
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in IT or a related field

Preferred

  • Experience with GIT or similar version control systems
  • Hands‑on experience with Azure Pipelines (CI/CD automation)
  • Reporting tools such as Cognos Analytics or Business Objects
  • Experience with IBM InfoSphere suite (e.g., IGC)
  • Experience delivering end‑to‑end data integration solutions
  • Experience in both development and operations roles
  • SCRUM / Kanban
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary Agile environment
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in IT or related fields

Nice to Have

As we explore building new data capabilities in the cloud:

  • Experience with cloud platform tooling

How to succeed
We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

Using bullet points again (ideally a maximum of 6), this is your opportunity to outline the skills and experience needed for the role.

  • Focus on what you want candidates to achieve rather than what they need.
  • Highlight only essential skills (max 6), as we don't want to discourage candidates if they don't tick every box.
  • Analyse the skills you have in the job ad and cut them down to the essential qualities needed to be successful in the role. Be accurate and specific.
