Household Manager / Amsterdam

An American family relocating to Amsterdam is seeking an experienced Household Manager / Private Chef to join their household on a long-term basis. The family has two children aged 4 and 7 and lives in a beautiful 1,000 m² historic residence close to the Rijksmuseum and Vijzelgracht. The position is Monday to Friday, 45 hours per week, with occasional additional hours required for family dinners and entertaining. The role can be live-in or live-out, with a private apartment provided for the successful live-in candidate. The salary is €50,000–€70,000 gross per year, depending on experience. The family would ideally like someone to start ASAP but can wait for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management and smooth running of the home, ensuring it is maintained to an exceptionally high standard. Duties will include housekeeping, laundry and ironing, wardrobe management, organising household supplies, overseeing cleaners and coordinating external contractors and household services. You will also assist with preparing the home for guests and entertaining, managing bedrooms and linens, organising storage and ensuring the property remains beautifully presented at all times.

Cooking is an important part of the role. The candidate should be confident preparing healthy, family-friendly meals for both adults and children, creating weekly menus and sourcing high-quality ingredients. Experience preparing a variety of cuisines is preferred, and you should be comfortable cooking for dinner parties and entertaining when required.

The ideal candidate will have at least 3–5 years of experience in private household housekeeping, household management, estate management or luxury hospitality, ideally with experience working in large properties. You should be highly organised, proactive, discreet and able to work independently. Excellent English is required, along with strong knowledge of caring for high-end furnishings and materials. A current food hygiene certificate and professional cooking experience are required. A love of animals is also important, as the family may get a dog.

Childcare is not part of the role, although the candidate should be comfortable working around children. Travel is not required. The family is looking for someone who is genuinely interested in a long-term position and will initially offer a seven-month contract. Candidates must have an EU passport or Dutch residence permit, a recent police check/DBS, the DBS Update Service and strong written references, including a minimum of three verbal references. An NDA will also be required.
