About the department

The Department of Philosophy at Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) focuses on philosophy that is relevant to the contemporary societal and scientific challenges we face, combining rigorous philosophical analysis with openness to insights from other disciplines. The department organizes its research in four clusters: Ethics, Business and Justice; Mind, Cognition and Embodiment; Science, Knowledge and Technology; and Arts, Culture and Power. Teaching across Tilburg University is central to our mission: besides our own Bachelor's and Master's programs in Philosophy, we teach philosophy courses to students throughout the university, including in psychology, economics, social sciences, and artificial intelligence.

Your position

We are looking for a lecturer (or lecturers) to teach a subset of the courses below, starting as soon as possible. The ability to teach one of the first two courses is required; the ability to teach one of the other two is a strong advantage. Supervisory experience is a must.

1. History of Economic Thought (Bachelor's, for Economics students) — required


2. Ethics (Master's program in Philosophy) — required


3. Philosophy and the Limits of Psychology (Master's program in Philosophy) — desirable


4. Ethics for Economics students — desirable

In addition, you will supervise Bachelor's and/or Master's theses.

There is room for a full-time (1.0 FTE) position, though we are also open to a part-time appointment (starting with one day a week) — see the application procedure below for how to indicate your availability.

Your profile

• A completed PhD (candidates about to complete their degree need to include a testimony of this, such as a note of the supervisor testifying that the PhD has been handed in and approved of), and a master degree in Philosophy.


• Demonstrable experience teaching at university level, and a strong commitment to teaching quality.


• Able to teach at least History of Economic Thought (to economy students) and/or Ethics (in the Master Philosophy); experience with teaching courses like Philosophy and the Limits of Psychology and/or (Business) Ethics for Economics students is a plus.


• A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or the willingness to obtain one


• Good command of English; Dutch is an advantage but not a requirement


• A collegial, flexible, and proactive attitude

What we offer

• A temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) position for one year or a part-time appointment.


• Depending on education and experience, classification as Lecturer (Docent 4), salary scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) — indicative full-time gross monthly salary of approx. €3,546–€5,538, to be confirmed during the procedure


• Holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%


• Pension accrual with ABP

Your application should include a CV, a brief (1 page) letter of motivation, and a short (1 page) set-up proposal for the courses History of Economic Thought and/or Ethics (Master's Philosophy) — we do not need and will not look at proposals for the other two courses.

In your letter, please state how many days per week you are available; we welcome candidates who would also consider an appointment for fewer days. As part of the selection procedure, shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a trial lecture (proef-college) for the hiring committee.
