Senior Legal Counsel

The EMEA legal team supports Dyson’s activities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. We are trusted business partners, working closely with stakeholders throughout the EMEA markets to deliver legal services, enabling Dyson’s continued commercial success and managing any associated legal risks. We provide high-quality business-focused legal advice, helping the business to establish and enforce its relationships with third parties; create and defend its compelling performance claims; protect the Dyson brand; and ensure that it conducts its activities in compliance with applicable laws.

About the Role

This role is to act as a Senior Legal Counsel for the EMEA region, with responsibility for all contractual matters (and any related issues concerning Dyson’s relationships with third parties) across the region. Reporting into the General Counsel for EMEA, you will be joining a collaborative and forward-thinking legal team, dealing with interesting and multi-jurisdictional work.

As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will:

• Ensure the effective and efficient delivery of legal services, including by:
  - determining how to optimise the use of legal resources and prioritise work;
  - engaging, and managing the use of, external legal counsel and ensuring value for money;
  - collaborating with internal stakeholders across the EMEA region;
  - coordinating with other legal teams within Dyson to deliver cohesive advice;
  - working with the EMEA General Counsel to drive continuous improvement.
• Draft and negotiate commercial contracts (including those with suppliers, retailers, distributors and marketplaces) across a variety of EMEA jurisdictions; and provide legal advice on existing contractual arrangements.
• Help the business to navigate complex legal issues and understand legal risks.
• Advise on the interpretation of Dyson’s legal compliance policies, and provide competition law advice to the business, in collaboration with Dyson’s Legal Compliance and Ethics team.
• Support the business to resolve disputes with third parties, including any litigation (with support from external counsel and in collaboration with Dyson’s Global Litigation team).
• Proactively identify and assess legal risks; and devise risk mitigation strategies to address them.
• Help to develop and deliver the EMEA legal team’s strategic plans, and contribute towards defining our team’s culture, what we do, and how we do it.
• Proactively maintain an up-to-date knowledge of developments in relevant areas of law; and encourage knowledge retention and the sharing of best practice within the team.
• Identify and address training and awareness requirements for the EMEA business.
• Line manage two Legal Counsel, providing them with supervision, direction and support.

About You

• This is what we’re looking for:
• At least 6 years of relevant post-qualification experience, part of which has been obtained in-house. You’ll need to be qualified in an EU jurisdiction or England & Wales.
• Excellent attention to detail, drafting and analytical skills; and extensive experience of negotiating commercial contracts (including sales and distribution contracts) across various EMEA jurisdictions.
• A good understanding of European competition law and prior experience of advising on competition law considerations (preferably, within a retail environment and including the implementation and management of a selective distribution system).
• Ability to identify and contextualise legal risks; and an understanding of the role of an in-house legal team in advising on those risks.
• Solid commercial acumen. You need to be able to discern legal issues from business issues, and tailor your advice to recognise commercial considerations and practical realities.
• Excellent communication skills. You need to be able to adapt your communication style to the situation and audience; and explain complex issues clearly and in a way that is easy for non-legal stakeholders to understand.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of seniority, develop trust and credibility, and managing strong personalities.
• The confidence and resilience to proactively contribute to discussions, ask questions, and challenge decisions to ensure that Dyson does the right thing.
• Ability to work under pressure and proven experience of managing multiple stakeholders and competing demands in a fast-paced environment. You need to be able to prioritise your time effectively and adopt a pragmatic approach to solving problems and getting things done.
• A team player, passionate about developing and supporting others, and enthusiastic to get involved in team initiatives and projects.
• Fluent in English and comfortable providing advice and drafting legal documents in English (other European languages will be considered an additional plus)
