The role of the (Senior) Patent Attorney is ensuring Intellectual Property of Sonion is adequately protected, IP risk effectively mitigated, and IP is supporting business value in line with the IP Strategyand Business strategy. This includes proactively harvesting inventions, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, advising on trade secret protection, instructing patent agents around the world, defending Sonion’s patents, opposing third party patents and advising on IP risk such as infringement and validity.

The current head of IP role, IP Manager, is fulfilled on an interim basis until September 2025. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will work alongside the current IP manager and lead the Intellectual Property organization thereafter, including being part of Sonion’s R&D leadership team, reporting to the CTIO & Managing Director of Sonion Netherlands and you are working closely together with the Legal department/General Counsel.

You will be based in our office in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.

Your tasks and responsibilities

• Managing Sonion’s patent portfolio, including executing the needed actions within the
  prescribed deadlines, and Sonion’s trade secret portfolio;
• Managing external service providers;
• Propose and take actions to maximize business benefits through exploitation of IP assets and
  to minimize IP risks in business activities;
• Advise the internal organization, based on the IP Strategy, IP competitive reports and other
  policies;
• Delivering IP risk infringement reports and final acceptance of the risk at executive level;
• Driving the company IP Strategy as a critical success factor by describing, monitoring and
  tailoring due to, for example, business strategy, budget, technology trends and legislative
  changes.

Your profile

• Master’s degree in science, ideally in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering,
  or a related discipline, but other science backgrounds will also be considered;
• Registered European Patent Attorney with at least 5 years of post-qualification experience;
• Experience with working with senior management, cross-functional project management and
  excellent collaborative skills in working with internal and external stakeholders;
• Experience with IP tools including patent databases, prior art searches and freedom-to-operate opinions;
• Able to work independently and a self-starter, collaborating with others;
• Strategic insight, being able to advise on IP strategy;
• Business acumen, motivated to deeply understand business and optimizing relevance and
  use of IP assets for business;
• Learner Mindset;
• Good communication skills both verbal and written in English, mastering the specific
  language in these areas, but with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
• Ideally, prior in-house experience and/or management experience.
