We are looking for a scientist to strengthen our cheese cultures innovations with a strong focus on understanding and improving the phage robustness of cultures. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the cheese business team on the one hand, and with dsm-firmenich's internal and external scientific network on the other. The cheese cultures team is based in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Your role will be key in accelerating our innovation programs on starter culture design to shape the future together with our customers. We are looking for a (Senior) Scientist Strain Development Cultures to join our Research & Development team to develop innovative starter cultures for cheese applications. Your key responsibilities Design cheese starter cultures: Lead and participate in research projects to optimize cheese starter cultures for acidification rate, phage robustness, and flavour development. Provide leadership in the phage research: Lead the phage team in developing and executing the phage strategy for dairy starter cultures. Communicate advances to the scientific community and costumer communication platforms. Improve the phage robustness of starter cultures: Translate business needs into projects to improve the phage robustness of starter cultures from lab scale to pilot plant scale validation. Serve as the primary point of contact for the Global Phage Team: Act as the primary liaison between the R&D team and the Global Phage Team, which is responsible for overseeing and supporting phage-related costumer support. Expand bacteriophage expertise: Take the initiative to advance existing knowledge of starter cultures bacteriophages interactions, including understanding infection mechanisms of phages and phage defense mechanisms of lactic acid bacteria. Develop, validate, and implement new methodologies: Evaluate and deploy new methodologies as needed for project requirements, including the use of artificial intelligent to explore large genetic and phenotypic data sets. Embrace the strength of diversity. You bring You have a PhD in food technology or food microbiology and preferably have several years of experience in a relevant field. You have a strong affinity and background in lactic acid bacteria, with a deep understanding of the relationship between bacteriophages and lactic acid bacteria. You have experience in molecular biology and bioinformatics. With a track record of leading and working within a research team for several years, you will bring valuable leadership experience to the table. You have worked together with external research partners. You collaborate easily with multiple stakeholders, including business colleagues, application labs, fellow scientists, and external parties.
