Job Description - STA: Global Sustainability Stakeholder Engagement Consultant

Step into an STA assignment where your public affairs and project management skills help shape ING’s sustainability advocacy efforts. As Global Sustainability Stakeholder Engagement Consultant, you’ll help increase ING’s impact by bringing expertise, structure, and alignment to our global advocacy agenda, and drive the implementation. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of public policy, sustainability strategy and stakeholder engagement, while informing discussions that matter on a global stage.

The team

You’ll join ING’s Global Sustainability (GS) Department, reporting to the Head of Stakeholder Engagement. Our department supports the entire bank in embedding sustainability into decision‑making and long‑term strategy. We collaborate closely with business lines across Retail, Business Banking and Wholesale Banking, as well as SuPRA, Research, Communications and sustainability SPOCs around the world.
We’re a diverse, international team of 36 professionals who combine expertise, curiosity and impact‑driven energy. Together, we aim to raise the bar for ING and the wider industry, translating sustainability ambitions into action and shaping how ING shows up in global discussions on climate, nature and social topics.

Roles and responsibilities

In this assignment, you will contribute to the structure, coordination and execution of ING’s global sustainability (ESG) advocacy efforts. Your work will help align ING’s voice internally and externally, strengthen our influence, and deepen our relationships with key stakeholders worldwide.

Depending on your expertise, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and contributing to ING’s strategic approach, structured framework and practical roadmap for priority sustainability advocacy.

  • Driving implementation of this roadmap and coordinating cross‑departmental alignment.

  • Maintaining a rolling, up‑to‑date overview of key advocacy messages and external networks to leverage these messages.

  • Ensuring the consistent tracking of ING’s sustainability commitments in partnership with country sustainability SPOCs and Compliance.

  • Supporting structured intel gathering on sustainability developments, including tooling and processes.

  • Monitoring legislative and policy developments, such as the EU Green Deal, CSRD and EPBD, and delivering clear updates across the organisation.

  • Contributing to relationship‑building and engagement with external stakeholders, including EU institutions, UN agencies, industry coalitions and policy forums.

  • Supporting the preparation of position papers, consultation responses and advocacy briefs.

  • Coordinating internal alignment across Sustainability, business lines, Risk, Legal and other departments to ensure consistency of messaging.

How to succeed

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

To thrive in this assignment, you bring:

  • Experience in public affairs, advocacy or external stakeholder engagement, ideally with exposure to EU political or regulatory processes.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to coordinate, align, and deliver across multiple stakeholders.

  • Clear, concise communication skills with the ability to interpret complex policy topics and translate them into relevant briefs.

  • Political acumen, strategic thinking and the ability to navigate uncertainty.

  • A collaborative and diplomatic working style, able to build trust quickly.

  • Knowledge of or interest in climate policy, energy transition frameworks or sustainable finance regulation.
