Graduation Internship - Energy Prediction

Your mission to graduation
Big Ass Battery – yes, that is our real name – is revolutionizing energy storage one (big) battery at a time. Our flagship product? A modular industrial battery beast built for large-scale use cases like grid stabilization, industrial peak shaving, and storing all that sweet, sweet solar and wind power. Inside the belly of this beast? A Linux-based embedded system. Around it? An AI-driven cloud platform called SmartBAB (we were this close to calling it SkyNet). This platform helps our batteries act smartly by forecasting customer energy consumption and making real-time decisions. 

Now here’s where you come in. We’re looking for a brave student to develop and validate energy consumption forecasting models using historical usage data, weather conditions, business activity, seasonal patterns, and anything else you think the battery gods care about. Your mission; build a rock-solid, razor-sharp AI model that predicts power consumption at least 24 hours in advance. This model will be integrated into our SmartBAB cloud platform to make our batteries proactive and even more efficient.

• Analyze historical energy data and external data sets (weather, industry activity, lunar phases optional 😉)


• Select and fine-tune the best forecasting techniques (think: regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, deep learning – the good stuff)


• Validate and evaluate your models with ruthless precision


• Integrate & demonstrate your creation into the SmartBAB platform

This all will lead to a graduation internship that delivers:

• A working and validated forecasting model with impressive accuracy


• A prototype integration within the SmartBAB cloud environment


• Clear documentation that validates your deliverable and sets guidelines for future development

What do you have to bring next to Big Ass vibes?
At Big Ass Battery, we’re looking for someone who doesn’t just get their energy from the sun. We need someone charged up (pun intended) with positive energy. So, if you’re someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, who enjoys being connecting with people, and making real systems work in the real world and enjoys having a bit of fun along the way—you’ll fit right in. Here’s the ideal mix:

• You’re studying Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, Technical Computer Science or something similar on a Bachelor or Master level


• You have a strong interest and proven experience with AI and statistics


• Experience or strong affinity with Python, data analysis and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost or Scikit-learn


• You can work independently, think analytically, and aren’t afraid of the occasional mind-bending dataset


• You have the ability to be in the office physically for 5 days a week — no working from home during your mission

About Big Ass Battery 🔋
We are Big Ass Battery; a fast-growing scale-up in the premier league of the energy transition. We build energy storage systems at the highest level: from battery cell to complete 10ft battery containers. Big Ass Battery is a Dutch company and we are located in Helmond. We didn't fit in our previous office anymore so that is why we traded up in november 2023 to our new facility of 15.000 m2 and a total surface of 41.775 m2!
