Project: Investigation of Ash Melting Behavior of Biomass and Waste Feedstocks for Improved Gasification Performance

The bubbling fluidized bed gasification process is an effective thermochemical conversion technology that utilizes waste as solid fuel to produce synthesis gas, a key component in biofuel and biochemical production. GIDARA Energy has been conducting experimental pilot test campaigns using different varieties of feedstock in the High Temperature Winkler (HTW®) gasifier, which is a bubbling fluidized bed reactor. These test campaigns aim to evaluate the gasification potential of different feedstocks, optimize process conditions, and overcome technical challenges. During these test campaigns, it was observed that feedstock properties, such as ash melting behavior,  play a key role in determining the overall performance of the gasifier.

The aim of this study is to understand the ash melting behavior of different feedstocks and correlate it with other physical and chemical properties. This involves conducting a literature survey on the ash melting behavior of biomass and waste feedstocks, improving the existing database of feedstock properties, and using this database to develop correlations between the measured feedstock properties and ash melting behavior, to identify relationships that may impact gasification performance. At the end of the internship, the student is expected to prepare a detailed report of their findings, and give a presentation to the company and the university supervisor.

  • Enrolled in a Master’s program in process, chemical engineering, sustainable energy or similar
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, sustainability and innovation
  • Self-driven, proactive, eager to learn and analytical mindset with strong communication skills
  • Knowledge about thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste is an advantage.
  • Duration: 4 months starting August 2025 (starting date is flexible)
  • Location: GIDARA Energy, The Base, Schipol (Onsite/Hybrid)
  • Compensation: A suitable internship allowance of 650 euro per month
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leaves per internship month (for a full-time internship)
  • OV-card for travel to work
