Job Description - Jobs at The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) –  The FAO is an intergovernmental organisation with 194 member nations, two associate members, and one member organisation, the European Union. 1). Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Specialist

Location: Abuja

Job Type: Full-time

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide PSEA technical support to PSEA Focal Point and Alternates, Country Office teams, including programming, partnerships, human resources, etc to ensure mainstreaming of PSEA processes and build technical capacity to ensure sustainability.
  • Deliver PSEA awareness sessions/refresher trainings to all personnel in country; capacity building of PSEA Focal Points and Alternates and in country FAO implementing partners as required.
  • In line with FAO’s PSEA Policy, develop a robust PSEA Work Plan for FAO [country office], adapted to the local context.
  • In coordination with relevant Officers at country level, support or implement outreach and engagement with programme beneficiaries and wider affected communities in areas of FAO programme implementation.
  • Review existing complaints and feedback mechanisms – where established- to ensure mechanisms can safely and confidentially handle SEA allegations if received. If not established, establish appropriate mechanisms ensuring consultation with affected communities.
  • Carry out SEA risk assessments in [insert country office], identify, and support implementation of appropriate SEA prevention, mitigation, and response measures to strengthen protection of communities where FAO works.
  • Support FAO participation in inter-agency CBCMs and interagency PSEA Network meetings.
  • Ensure a victim/survivor-cantered approach mechanisms are established or strengthened, and that SEA incidents and allegations are reported through the appropriate channels designated at FAO.
  • Initiate PSEA capacity assessments and strengthening activities with implementing partners to ensure application of the UN implementing partner protocol.

Minimum Requirements

  • University Degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, International Development, or any other relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in any of the following areas: prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), accountability to affected people (AAP), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), survivor/victim assistance, protection, child protection, safeguarding.
  • Working knowledge of English.
  • National of Nigeria or resident of the country with valid work permit.

Technical / Functional Skills:

  • Experience in facilitating training and capacity building activities on PSEA is required.

  • Experience establishing, maintaining, or working with complaints and feedback mechanisms desirable.
  • Demonstrable report and presentation writing skills.
  • Familiarity with data protection standards and confidentiality is required.
  • Work experience in field locations and humanitarian settings required.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse problems, make appropriate recommendations, effective decisions, including in emergency settings.
  • Experience working on prevention and response to sexual exploitation and abuse in humanitarian and complex emergencies particularly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the UN system and global coordination structures (e.g. IASC) an advantage.
  • Sensitivity and commitment to cultural diversity, gender issues and victim/survivor approaches is required.

2). Natural Resources/Environmental Specialist

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Providing technical support to for FAO’s Technical assistance to ACReSAL and AAD – GGW activities related to landscapes restoration services in Nigeria (e.g. GCP on knowledge for action and contributions to GGW, EU FAO-ICRAF, ACReSAL and SURAGGWA projects);
  • Mapping and analyses of stakeholder capacity learning needs and gaps including Strengthen capacity of Master trainers on large scale land restoration practices and approaches including on development of proposals of sub-projects for investments for communities.
  • Contribute to the content preparation, revising technical documents and facilitate logistical organization of training and regional workshops with partners.
  • Supervise and facilitate communities’ consultations and the preparation and restoration of degraded lands in the planned ACReSAL States and/or other localities.
  • Facilitate and supervise the seeding and reforestation of plots/sites of lands with herbaceous and woody seeds and seedlings prepared for restoration and rehabilitation.
  • Develop Step by step procedures for the Land Restoration manual and provide support, appropriate methodologies and analysis at this level to choose those specific communities that would seek to participate in landscape restoration.;
  • Provide technical support to NTFP-related value chains for transformation, income generation and food/feed security activities (for ACReSAL and GGW).
  • Contribute to socio-economic impact assessments and documentation on priority value chains in ACReSAL/GGW, including those selected for their nutritional and health value.
  • Carry out socio-economic and ecological monitoring with the communities of these planted/seeded plots,
  • Support training on and collection of restoration seeds of local species (woody, herbaceous) for the next planting season.
  • Collect all the necessary data and photos required for monitoring and reporting on field activities (geo-referencing data; areas covered; survival rates, etc.);
  • Carry out and supervise socio-economic and nutritional surveys with ACReSAL/GGW communities and promote the processing of NTFPs;
  • Respond to technical related forestry/natural resources issues and land restoration; feedback and clarifications, supporting the country Office.
  • Produce a quarterly activity progress report and a final report.
  • Perform any other duties as required.
  • Coordinate activities across the team and collaborate effectively with other experts and stakeholders.
  • Conduct surveys to identify biophysical and social drivers of degraded lands and recommend adaptation and mitigation approaches.
  • Assess the awareness of local communities regarding restoration of degraded land, threats, climate change trends, and opportunities for improved management.
  • Review and analyse state-level policies related to mangrove management and environmental protection.
  • Identify links between social protection components and mangrove management for community livelihood resilience.
  • Collaborate with experts to document impacts, publish success stories, and contribute to project results dissemination.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following
Minimum Requirements:

  • Specialized University Degree or advanced University Degree in relevant field (Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Ecosystem Management).
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in environmental projects, particularly mangrove ecosystems management, biodiversity, environmental impact assessments, and ecosystem restoration.

3). Value Chain Development Specialist

Location: Abuja
Employment Type: Full-time

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Team Leader, prepare and present a communication on the contribution of wild foods and forests to healthy diets, and nutrition for the most vulnerable, as well as on bioeconomy for sustainable food and agriculture, based on AAD/GGW publications (socio-economic baselines) and published materials on northern Nigeria.
  • Prepare and deliver appropriate learning needs and tools for the target audience and provide on-demand technical and advisory support requested by ACReSAL for the development, implementation and reporting on project activities.
  • Review all the task and activities contained in the project document and produce a comprehensive matrix to clearly indicate the training needs and modules for the promotion of NTFP’s and reporting modalities.
  • Carry out a comprehensive base line assessment on NTFP’s.
  • Facilitate trainings at community level to explain in depth the restoration process from both a technical (development of proposals of sub-projects on landscape restoration investments and of NTFP value chain strengthening) and organizational standpoint.
  • Train the communities on how to establish the NTFP nursery and to oversee and participate in all steps of the restoration.
  • Technical Lead to produce handouts and reports on strengthening ACReSAL/country capacities to enable forest-base contributions to healthy and sustainable agrifood systems in Nigeria and backstopping as required.
  • Oversee assessments on capturing consumption of wild/forest foods in dietary and on a global methodology for assessing ecological sustainability of NTFP harvest and production in ACReSAL States and capacity strengthening for improved data on NTFPs.
  • Provide technical guidance/guidelines for ACReSAL project on wild food/NTFP in collaboration with implementing States and national partners.
  • Participate in Technical Meetings Workshops related to the project and or other Environment projects in the representation.
  • Support the Representation in any other technical area as delegated by the FAOR.
  • Preparation and submission of all progress reports linked to the deliverables.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree in Environmental Studies or other related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in Forestry/Community mobilization
  • Working knowledge of English and any main Nigerian language (Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin).

  • Excellent skill on training to enhance the effectiveness and equity in the distribution of NTFP value chain benefits.
