Job DescriptionJOB TITLE: Early Years (Class Teacher)
REPORTS TO: Key Stage Coordinator & HOS
DEPARTMENT :Teaching
WORKING LANGUAGE: English
WORKING HOURS: Monday to Friday, 7:20 am to 4:00 pm, with occasional Saturday work as required.
LOCATION: Abuja, Nigeria
JOB PURPOSE: To enable young children to make good progress in their learning by building upon the skills they have; to assist all pupils to develop emotional security, self-belief and mature social skills, ensuring that all nursery school pupils attain to their potential through the effective delivery of a high-quality program of teaching and learning from early years to reception.
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE: This description supplements the teacher’s contract. Teachers are vital to school operations, responsible for students' education and safety.
The Early Year Foundation Stage Teacher is selected by the Director of Schools in consultation with the HOS and Key Stage Coordinator.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
- Developing and implementing lessons and work schemes, using the Early Years Foundation Stage as a framework.
- Motivate and stimulate a child’s learning abilities, often encouraging learning through experience
- Provide pastoral care and support to children within a secure learning environment
- Teach an inspiring and appropriate Early Years Curriculum following the EYFS framework for England and Wales
- Ensure children are settled in well when they first join the school/class
- Have a clear understanding of the needs of pupils, including those with special educational needs; gifted and talented; EAL (English as an additional language); and/or disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them all
- Use teaching methods which capture pupils’ interest and maintain their engagement through:
- Effective questioning that includes open and closed questions, together with the use of probing, supplementary questions
- Clear instruction, effective modelling and accurate explanation
- Listening carefully to pupils, analysing their responses and responding constructively in order to take their learning forward
- Selecting and making good use of ICT and other learning resources which enable objectives to be met
- Providing opportunities to develop pupils’ wider understanding by relating their learning to real life .
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrate professionalism and cultural inclusivity.
- Understand and adhere to school policies and guidelines.
- Prioritise safeguarding of children.
- Attend assemblies and actively assist in the supervision of pupils
- Promote good attendance and monitor in accordance with the School’s attendance policy.
- Be available for all parent-teacher conferences.
- Attend all relevant meetings, including planning and training meetings.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR
- Financial accountability and classroom resource management.
- Effective teaching methods engaging all pupils.
- Timely communication with parents and posting test scores.
- Adherence to school policies, attendance at meetings, and contribution to school events.
- Curriculum planning, classroom management, and displays of student work.
- Completion and implementation of lesson plans and professional development activities.
- Positive attitude and interpersonal relations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Early Childhood related subject from a reputable institution or any related discipline with a Teaching certificate if educational background is not in the field of Education.
- Profession certification in Education such as PGDE, CACHE, NVQ etc.
- MSc or MBA or professional certificates in Education or any related discipline will be an added advantage. British curriculum teaching experience is a MUST.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years relevant experience
