Chowdeck is an on-demand food delivery service for Africa. We help food vendors deliver meals seamlessly while providing customers with a platform to order meals from their favourite restaurants. In between the consumers and vendors sits our riders, who are the superstars of Chowdeck.

Where you come in

We're looking for a Junior Backend Engineer to help build and maintain the systems that power Chowdeck. You'll work closely with experienced engineers to develop features, solve technical problems, and learn how to build reliable software at scale.

Our tech stack consists of NodeJS, MySQL, Redis, AWS, Google Cloud, and other technologies. You'll have the opportunity to work on products used daily by customers, vendors, and riders while receiving mentorship from experienced engineers.

In this role, you'll be required to:

• Build and maintain backend features.


• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.


• Assist in debugging and resolving production issues across services.


• Collaborate with Product, Design, Frontend, and other teams to deliver new features.


• Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback into your work.


• Monitor application performance and help investigate system issues.


• Contribute to technical documentation and internal tooling.


• Learn and apply engineering best practices across software development, testing, and deployment.


• Support the maintenance and improvement of APIs, services, and backend systems.


• Continuously improve your technical skills and understanding of Chowdeck's systems and products.

You're perfect for the Junior Backend Engineer role if you:

• Have fundamental knowledge of Node, JavaScript, and MySQL


• Can write code that meets our standards for style, maintainability, testability and best practices for a high-scale web environment.


• Have experience building software projects whether through internships, coursework, bootcamps, personal projects, or professional work.


• Approach problems with curiosity and a willingness to learn.


• Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with others.


• Take ownership of your work and are comfortable asking questions when you need support.


• Care deeply about building products that create great customer experiences.
