MAIN FUNCTIONS

Evaluate and comment on discipline engineering work performed both internally and by Contractors and sub-contractors to ensure that work is being executed by Company specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements. Facilitates effective execution of discipline engineering and design routines that align with the team's goals, objectives, and procedures. Assures accurate and timely communication among the team and other company Functions on discipline engineering activities, progress, and issues. In addition to technical ability, they should demonstrate sound communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

In addition to all Level 1 tasks and responsibilities, a Level 2:

  • Design and oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus and equipment.
  • Conduct analytical, environmental, operational, or performance studies in order to develop designs for products, such as marine engines, equipment, and structures.
  • Prepare, or direct the preparation of, product or system layouts and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Evaluate the operation of marine equipment during acceptance testing and shakedown cruises.
  • Analyze data to determine the feasibility of product proposals.
  • Confer with research personnel to clarify or resolve problems, and to develop or modify designs.
  • Investigate and observe tests on machinery and equipment for compliance with standards.
  • Conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine machinery and equipment.
  • Determine conditions under which tests are to be conducted, as well as sequences and phases of test operations.
  • Maintain and coordinate repair of marine machinery and equipment for installation on vessels.
  • Inspect marine equipment and machinery to draw up work requests and job specifications.
  • Review work requests and compare them with previous work completed on ships to ensure that costs are economically sound.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-15 years of closely related professional experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Civil Engineering or related engineering specialty, or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong knowledge of discipline design standards, specifications, codes, and appropriate safety criteria
  • Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software programs
  • Read, write, and speak fluent English, especially as it applies to technical and business communications

Purpose of the Position:

The Mechanical Specialist reports directly to the Engine room operations Superintendent on the FSO, which is located offshore Nigeria, West Africa.

The Mechanical Specialist is a member of the Engine room Operations Department and provides an advanced level of safety, main engine and auxiliary machinery, and personnel development expertise

The Mechanical Specialist is a multi-skilled, marine/FPSO-based individual and will be the focal point for higher-level marine engineering assignments on the FSO. The Mechanical Specialist is expected to be OIMS trained/certified and incorporate OIMS procedures into all maintenance/operations efforts. Additionally, the Mechanical Specialist must possess the experience and credentials to orchestrate the Competency Assessment/Assurance process as well as provide mentoring for the Technicians. The Mechanical Specialist, with the required large tanker/F(P)SO steam plant experience, is expected to have an advanced working level of maintenance/operations knowledge pertaining to high pressure boilers and the attendant auxiliary components. Further, the Mechanical Specialist must take a proactive role in addressing any atypical situations/issues that might affect operability. The Mechanical Specialist is responsible for monitoring/dosing boiler feed water, as well as monitoring/maintenance of the evaporators, which supply potable water for the FSO and field areas.

The Maintenance Team will work a 12-hour day primarily; however, the Mechanical Specialist must be able to deal with all operational issues outside of this time in an emergency.

The Mechanical Specialist may be required to act as a Deputy Operations Superintendent and should be prepared to perform the associated Supervisor's duties if called on to deputize.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Engine room operations Supt., the Mechanical Specialist will provide expertise to ensure control, coordination, and surveillance of all aspects of maintenance requirements on Specific areas of responsibilities will include:

  • Providing oversight, via OIMS, to ensure safety within the engine room spaces and other areas where maintenance efforts are underway.
  • Provide expert guidance relative to maintenance/operating of steam plant and components, i.e. boilers, feed pumps, turbo-generators, fuel systems, HVAC, IGS, COW, cargo pump turbines, and sewerage system
  • Monitoring the condition and quality of the boiler feed water and chemical dosing as required
  • Maintenance and monitoring of the evaporators as related to the quality of produced water and the testing of the produced potable water within the storage and transfer system.
  • Assist with the management of the CMMS (CAMS/SAP) and ensure that CMMS records are maintained and updated as required
  • Focal point for auxiliary and emergency diesel engine maintenance and repair
  • Point of contact for proper disposal of engine wastes, i.e. incineration of sludge oil, to comply with regulatory requirements
  • Provide direction to staff via the Competency Assessment/Assurance system to validate training effectiveness
  • Ensure that all maintenance activities on the FSO do not contravene any statutes, both national and international, and that all work is performed within industry guidelines.

Background and Qualifications Required:

  • Marine Engineer license with 5-7 years as a 3rd/2nd Engineer on a steam-powered VLCC/ULCC Tanker, or similar experience as a senior engine control room operator/senior mechanical tech/mechanical/operations lead on a steam 
  • powered FPSO, or similar experience on a motor-powered tanker with a hp steam auxiliary boiler.
  • Experience in the design and control logic of DCS operating systems
  • Valid Certificates: medical, firefighting certificate, first aid, survival craft, and personal survival at sea.
  • Communication and teamwork skills are essential.
  • A high level of computer ability and skills are necessary for this position.
