Job Description - Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist

Hydro Aluminium Metal is a leading supplier of extrusion ingots, sheet ingots, foundry alloys, wire rods, and high-purity aluminium, with a global production network of around 6,000 employees. With primary metal production facilities in Europe, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and Qatar, and recycling facilities throughout Europe and the U.S., two-thirds of our primary aluminium production is based on renewable energy.

What we offer you

Do you want to Shape the Future of Low Carbon Aluminium Innovation?

Do you want to work on cutting edge R&D projects in a global, future oriented company committed to a low carbon world? At Hydro Aluminium Metal, you will join a team that transforms ideas into real world impact — developing advanced alloys, breakthrough technologies, and sustainable solutions used across the globe.

We are now seeking both experienced professionals and ambitious recent or soon to be graduates (Master’s or PhD in 2024) to join our R&D team at Sunndalsøra. As a Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist, you will collaborate closely with our plants and customers to develop innovative casthouse products and alloys, including our flagship low carbon brands Hydro CIRCAL and Hydro REDUXA.

  • We offer an innovative, international work environment with opportunities to work globally at one of our production sites.

  • Career development through pioneering projects in green aluminium and advanced alloy research.

  • Collaboration with leading industrial and academic partners worldwide.

  • A creative, supportive R&D community that values new ideas and professional growth.

  • Participation in Hydro’s Graduate Program for recent graduates, offering a strong social and professional network across Hydro.

What you will be doing

You will take part in a wide range of R&D activities, such as:

  • Project management — planning, executing and leading research projects.

  • Developing and testing new alloys and casthouse technologies.

  • Technical customer collaboration in joint development projects.

  • Research partnerships with universities, institutes and industrial partners.

  • Participation in research council funded projects.

  • Presenting results through reports, webinars and presentations.

What will make you successful?

Who You Are

  • We believe the following traits will help you thrive in this role:

  • Entrepreneurial mindset — you seek new ideas and drive innovation.

  • Result oriented — you turn concepts into practical, high impact solutions.

  • Strong communicator — you present research clearly and collaborate effectively.

  • Team oriented — you enjoy working with others to achieve shared goals.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Metallurgy, Material Science, Nanotechnology, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or similar fields.

  • Open to both experienced candidates and recent/soon to be graduates.

  • Experience with project management, industrial processes or product development.

  • Experience with aluminium is an advantage.

  • Fluency in English.

Additional Information

  • Some domestic and international travel should be expected.

  • Health, environment and safety (HSE) are core values at Hydro. We seek colleagues who contribute positively through responsible and conscious HSE behaviour.

  • Please submit your CV, a brief cover letter, and all relevant transcripts (academic records, diplomas, certificates).

  • Only applications submitted through our online system will be considered.

  • As part of our recruitment process, we use Semac for background checks.

Ready to shape the future of aluminium?
