Independent Chair - Port Noise Liaison Committee

Port Otago Group’s business comprises a regional container terminal, bulk port activities, cruise and property investment and development. We operate 24/7 and service South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, working with customers to streamline their supply chains.  Our culture is hands-on, safety focused and encourages continuous improvement – and this extends to our Board and it’s sub-committees.

One of the challenges for any working Port is the noise impact for its community, which makes the Port Noise Liaison Committee important to how we operate. At its core, this Committee provides a forum to monitor the Port’s performance against The Port Noise Management Plan.

About the position:

The Committee meets six weekly and is made up of representatives from DCC, ORC, Port Otago, Port Chalmers community groups and Port users. The Board appointed Chair sits alongside these representatives and is primarily responsible for effectively chairing each of the Committee meetings.

Some preparatory work is required in between meeting times, including:

  • Preparing for meetings and responding to emails.
  • Monitoring the budget and performance of the Noise Liaison Committee’s goals/objectives.
  • Ensuring compliance and identifying/managing risk.

The Chair may also be required to attend Port Otago Board meetings from time to time to provide an update on the Committee’s progress, to chair other ad hoc meetings or complete site visits related to noise activity.

The Chair will be appointed for a period of two years, and in return for their contribution will receive a small monthly payment, and reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

What we’re looking for:

For us, the ideal Chair will:

  • Have strong leadership experience and be an excellent communicator.
  • Be well versed at planning and running meetings in a way which meets both governance and operational requirements.
  • Be impartial, fair and able to respect confidences.
  • Have some understanding of the current issues affecting and influencing the Committee.
  • Be able to travel to Dunedin and to commit the time required to participate effectively.
  • Ensure that any additional commitments held do not conflict with, or impact on, this role.
  • Complete a satisfactory MoJ check prior to starting.

How to apply?

Please apply via our Port Otago Careers website

Applications close 5pm on Friday 10 May 2024.
