Job Description - Operations Manager

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team as Operations Manager. Reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer, this hands-on role in New Zealand’s first berry innovative indoor growing environment in Foxton requires the ability to have oversight for optimal conditions of plant growth and health.

We believe in local production to supply local markets. We are one of the first indoor vertical farm producers with our flagship berry farm in Foxton. Our innovative farming methods are paving the way to a new future of food production in our country. All our berries are grown hydroponically in a controlled environment which lets us manage the impact on the planet. We grow in a vertical racking system, with full control over lights, temperature, humidity, and nutrients. We are agri-tech and innovation pioneers on a ground-breaking journey combining the latest technology with first-class horticultural practices, producing amazing fruit.

Purpose:

Key focus on maintaining all facets of the growing infrastructure and associated day to day tasks to ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the facility while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and productivity. As the organization expands with the setup of national and international sites, this role becomes increasingly critical and offers significant future potential.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to optimize efficiency and performance across all areas of vertical farm operations.
  • Work within a team of technicians, and maintenance personnel, providing leadership, guidance, and support to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Have oversight of spray and plant husbandry programmes.
  • Oversee inventory management, procurement, and ensuring adequate stock levels of inputs, equipment, and consumables to support continuous operation of the vertical farm.
  • Maintain rigorous quality control measures and food safety standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Inspect and maintain growing infrastructure, including dosing / irrigation, lighting systems, and climate control equipment, utilizing both technical knowledge and hands-on skills for troubleshooting and repairs. Coordinating with external vendors and contractors as needed to address issues and ensure the integrity and reliability of vertical farm infrastructure and equipment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including research and development, sales and marketing, and customer support, to support overall business objectives and drive strategic initiatives for growth and innovation.

About you:

  • Ideally have previous experience in plant care, horticulture, agriculture, or a related growing field.
  • Hands-on skills and mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Be highly organized, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Possess a driver’s license.
  • Excellent communication, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent team-work ethic.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in using computer systems, software applications, and digital tools.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a results-oriented mindset and a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Have great ability to problem solve and consistently work collaboratively with other departments, managing multiple work streams simultaneously.
  • Hold the right to work in New Zealand.

This is a full-time position. Monday through Friday weekly hours plus weekends and evenings as needed. This position works out of Foxton, Manawatu.
