Stud Groom Team Leader

We are seeking experienced and dedicated Stud Groom Team Leaders to join our team at Westbury Stud, Matamata to oversee the both the Broodmare and Yearling teams. As a Stud Groom Team Leader , you will be responsible for overseeing the care and management of our broodmares, foals, weanlings, yearlings and spelling horses as well as leading a team of dedicated people.

Key Responsibilities:

- Maintaining a high level of Health & Safety in all areas of the farm.

- Planning, organising and leading the day-to-day care of bloodstock ensuring the highest industry standards are applied to the bloodstock’s care, safety and wellbeing at all times.

- Demonstrate a strong understanding of equine reproduction and the management of broodmares, foalings, foals, weanlings, yearlings and spelling horses.

- Teasing mares.

- Attending foalings, foal watch/care and being on call for emergencies.

- Assisting the veterinarians (including the administration of treatments), farriers and chiropractors.

- Recognising horse lameness and/or illness requiring veterinarian or farrier attention.

- Maintain accurate records, ie animal health, movements and treatments.

- Assisting in and implementing feed regimes for horses.

- Educating the horses to lead, walk, stand for the farrier/vet, travel, wear head collars and rugs.

-All aspects of horse grooming (washing, brushing, cleaning and maintaining hooves, trimming of manes and tails, etc).

- Train and supervise staff in the daily care of the broodmares and foals, weanlings, yearlings and spelling horses as well as assist with staff professional development, reviews and roster implementation.

- Providing leadership, management and mentoring to your team, ensuring they are fully informed of their roles.

- Creating an inspiring team environment with a communicative, positive and motivational culture.

- Work in conjunction with other Team Leaders to ensure an effective and efficient workflow across all divisions.

- Responsible for property and asset care and management; reporting any concerns to the Maintenance Team Leader and ensuring that all areas are maintained in an orderly manner including cleanliness of stables, barns and the foaling unit.

- Assisting the Stud Manager & Head of Operations.

Requirements:

- As a Stud Groom Team Leader in the broodmare division, you will ideally have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Broodmare Manager/Team Leader or 5 years of experience as a Senior Stud Groom/Assistant/2IC in a Broodmare division.

- In-depth knowledge of thoroughbred breeding, foaling and mare and foal care.

-As a Stud Groom Team Leader in the yearling division you will ideally have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Yearling Manager/Team Leader, or 5 years of experience as a Senior Stud Groom/Assistant/2IC in a Yearling division.

- Competent in preparing horses for sales.

- In-depth knowledge of educating weanlings and yearlings.

Both Roles Require:

- Excellent organizational and communication skills.

- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

- Excel at planning and prioritising.

- Ability to carry out physical activities (ie handling young horses) and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

The usual hours will be 40 hours per week from 7:30am – 4:30pm, as per our ten days on by four days off roster system, which has been designed to assist with a better work, life balance.
