Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi | About the Role

The Centre for Languages provides English programmes at all levels for students for whom English is a second or other language. We tutor permanent residents from a refugee background, new migrants, and international students from a number of different countries. Students then typically pathway into the workplace, back into the community empowered with stronger language skills, or on to study other disciplines at Wintec. A priority for the Centre has been to facilitate access to learning by making programmes as flexible as possible, including the use of new learning technologies.

We are seeking to employ a 0.5FTE fixed-term Academic Staff Member to start on 8 July and finish on 29 November 2024. Suitable applicants will need to be qualified and ideally have experience teaching English as an Additional Language at a low level, including second language literacy and numeracy. You may also be required to develop materials and be able to carry out assessment and moderation work.

You will be teaching contextualised EAL, which will involve creating a positive and supportive learning environment. You will use current, proven effective teaching strategies that promote learning, with a particular awareness of a holistic approach to student-centred teaching.

You will need appropriate language teaching qualifications and relevant extensive experience in teaching EAL and/or Literacy and Numeracy. You will also possess strong interpersonal skills, enjoy working and contributing in a team environment, and have an active interest in learning new skills.
